24th May

Brentwood 6th XI - 81 all out
Gidea Park & Romford 5th XI - 82-1
Gidea Park & Romford won by 9 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood's 6th team suffered a heavy defeat in their opening league match against Gidea Park & Romford 5ths at Romford Royal Liberty School.

Brentwood elected to bat first on a firm, dry, but rather green pitch and made a steady start with openers Ken Hobbs and Ravi Rupal putting on 29 for the first wicket, until the home side introduced Colin Jones and Anil Patel to their attack. Hobbs was out for 15 and Rupal for 12 and this started a collapse that saw an inexperienced Brentwood team collapse to 49 for 9 with five batsmen out for ducks.

A last wicket stand between Richard Horswill and no. 11 Ollie Vaughan made the final total a little more respectable, with Horswill playing a mature innings of 13 not out and Vaughan hitting four fours to finish as top scorer with 20.

It was not a difficult target for Gidea Park and they won comfortably with Brett making 32, Pegram 19 not out and Andy Jones 7 not out. Shreyas Moorti was the sole wicket taker for Brentwood.

31st May

North London 6th XI - 150-8
Brentwood 6th XI - 118-8
Match Drawn

Report by Ken Hobbs

Without a league match, Brentwood entertained visitors from Muswell Hill on Saturday.

Brentwood opted to field first on a very wet playing area and North London found it difficult to score against some good opening bowling from Prem Pithia and Ben Sach.

Change seamers Jon Hilliard and Ravi Rupal also bowled tidily as did debutant leg spinner Douglas Maxwell who took a wicket with his very first ball. Maxwell finished with 2-28 and the wickets were shared around with Pithia taking 2-13, Sach 1-18, Shreyas Moorti 2-21 and Hilliard 1-27.

The visitors eventually declared on 150-8 and this looked a difficult target in the conditions, especially when Brentwood lost both openers, Ash Paten and Rupal, with only four runs on the board.

But Ollie Walker and Sach put together a good stand for the third wicket until Walker was out for 14. Sach continued to bat very well but could not find enough partners who could stay with him and he was eventually out for 49 as he tried to force the pace.

But Brentwood never looked like losing with young Maxwell (8 not out) seeing his team through the last few overs with Moorti (3 not out) to earn a draw.

7th June

Brentwood 6th XI - 108 all out
Hutton 6th XI - 109-6
Hutton won by 4 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Again without a league match, Brentwood took on local rivals Hutton on the artificial pitch at Hartswood.

Batting first Brentwood were in trouble at 21-3, but opener Ravi Rupal looked sound and he made 22 sharing a good partnership with Richard Horswill, 11. But wickets soon began to fall once more and of the remaining batsmen only Peter Myers with 14 made double figures, as Brentwood were dismissed for just 108, Dunn taking five wickets for Hutton.

Brentwood's bowling and fielding was much more impressive than their batting and they made Hutton work extremely hard for the win. Prem Pithia (0-9 from 6 overs), Peter Myers (0-7 from 4), Richard Horswill (1-23 from 7), Dougie Maxwell (0-26 from 11) and Malcolm Horswill (2-13 from 8) bowled good spells. When Collinson was well caught by Paul Reilly for 39 it looked as though Brentwood had a chance of a win.

C. Steinberg batted well for 32 not out and he eventually saw his team home, but with Hutton requiring just nine runs, Rupal and Andy Maxwell came on to bowl and made life extremely difficult for the home side. They bowled 7.2 overs between them before Hutton scrambled the winning runs with less than three of the last twenty over remaining. Rupal finished with 1-3 from 4 overs, 2 maidens, and Maxwell had 0-5 from 3.2 overs.

14th June

Wanstead 6th XI - 154 all out
Brentwood 6th XI - 155-3
Brentwood won by 7 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood 6ths produced a shock result on Saturday by beating league leaders Wanstead at Fairlop Oak. Brentwood went in to the game without a single league point to their name having previously played just one competitive match this season, but they ran out comfortable winners.

It was a good all round team performance with everyone contributing to the win, and father and son, Andy and Douglas Maxwell, both had an afternoon to remember. Douglas took 5-31 with his leg spin and Andy then scored an unbeaten 96 to see his team to their first win of the season.

Brentwood put Wanstead in to bat and Prem Pithia and Peter Myers bowled good opening spells as did change bowlers Malcolm and Richard Horswill, but the home side still made a steady start through openers Batra and Sanghi. It was Malcolm Horswill who took the first wicket, bowling Batra for 24. Off spinner James Woodward took a wicket in his first over but it was the introduction of Douglas Maxwell that turned the game. Only Sanghi (44) and Ferguson (42) made significant contributions as Maxwell worked his way through the Wanstead batting. Ajay Pithia picked up two late wickets to finish off the Wanstead innings.

Although 154 looked a modest score, Brentwood's highest innings total in previous games this season was only 118 and it looked as though they might struggle again when Woodward was bowled by Peters for 1 in the third over. Andy Maxwell joined Ravi Rupal and these two successfully negotiated a difficult time against the new ball. They put on 74 until Rupal was stumped for 19, a solid and very important innings. Shreyas Moorti then came in and played in a similar style to Rupal and by now Andy Maxwell was regularly finding the boundary and a Brentwood victory began to look inevitable. Moorti hit three 4s in an innings of 19 and when he was out Prem Pithia (5 not out) partnered Maxwell to secure the victory, with Maxwell finishing just four short of his century.

Old Parkonians 4th XI - 245-9
Brentwood 6th XI - 64 all out
Old Parkonians won by 185 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood 6ths ran up against a stronger and much more experienced Old Parks 4th team but there were still some good performances from Brentwood's youngsters.

The visitors were put in on a wet track and openers Cox and Mirza made a good start, taking full advantage of a short boundary at the Brentwood School ground. They added 55 for the first wicket before Jack Hoy was rewarded for a good spell when Cox was out hit wicket.

Mirza continued to attack, hitting four sixes, but he was out for 49 when Richard Horswill was introduced to the attack and induced a false shot which resulted in a smart catch at cover by Brentwood debutant Alex Haynes.

When Chinaman bowler Owen Mathias replaced Horswill he also picked up a wicket but Brentwood found it difficult to contain the Old Parks batsmen. Allbury made 45, skipper Jim Martin 27, and Keen 25, but the bowlers stuck to their task and James Woodward, Peter Myers and Andrea Allen picked up a wicket apiece.

Myers took 2-34, while Hoy returned and finished with impressive figures for 2-28 from his ten overs, and Horswill also bowled well and ended with 2-16.

Brentwood's batsmen never threatened to get close to the target and collapsed to 64 all out with Weekes, 5-12, doing most of the damage. However, Alex Haynes top scored for Brentwood and showed a lot of potential with a good innings of 17.

28th June

Brentwood 6th XI - 180-8
Hornchurch 5th XI - 182-7
Hornchurch won by 3 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

This was a closely contested match with Hornchurch finally coming out on top thanks to the depth of their batting.

Brentwood were put in at Great and Little Warley Cricket Club and found batting difficult against a lively Hornchurch attack. Opener Ken Hobbs made 22 but Brentwood were 57 for 4 in the 26th over when Ian Dawes joined No. 3 Joe Earley.

Dawes added impetus to the innings, hitting two big sixes, before he was bowled by Coote for 28. Earley played very sensibly and carefully as Brentwood looked to build a competitive score and he found good partners in Richard Horswill and Jamie Dawes. When Dawes was out for 15, Douglas Maxwell and Liam Farge helped Earley steer Brentwood to a sixth batting point and a declaration after 52 overs. Earley finished with 62 not out, his first 50 for the club, and a very valuable innings for his team.

Brentwood made a good start after tea with debutant Ben Churchill bowling Ben Spray and Kevin Milne taking a good catch at slip off the bowling of Farge to dismiss Collison. Then Richard Horswill came on and bowled Roberts to put Brentwood on top.

Some aggressive hitting by Clifford, who survived three difficult catching chances, returned the initiative to Hornchurch. The introduction of Maxwell to the attack saw the leg spinner take two quick wickets, dismissing Clifford for 36 and Noolan for 12. This left Hornchurch 90-5 at the start of the last 20 overs and Brentwood looked to have a good chance of a win but Cossington and Bullard batted well and set their team on the way to victory.

Ian Dawes dismissed Bullard for 27 and Earley caught and bowled Cossington for 34 but Tiwari (10 not out) and Coote (15 not out) made sure the visitors took 18 points for the win, while Brentwood had to be satisfied with 9 bonus points from a good performance.

5th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 176
Hainault & Clayhall 5th XI - 151 all out
Brentwood won by 25 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood sixths achieved their second league win of the season with another excellent all round performance at Hainault on Saturday.

Brentwood elected to bat first on a good pitch and Ken Hobbs and Gautam Datta both began to find the boundary regularly, putting on 51 for the second wicket.

Hobbs made 26 and Datta 31, but both fell to the spin of Hainault's veteran skipper Keith Hurst.

Youngsters Jon Hilliard and Richard Horswill shared a good partnership of 28 for the fifth wicket with Hilliard batting well for 18. Horswill was then joined by Anand Patil, one of three debutants in the Brentwood line up, and he made 17 before being run out.

Joe Daborn contributed a useful seven runs as Brentwood reached their target of 175 to get six batting points, although the last few wickets fell cheaply. Horswill was left unbeaten on 29, an impressive innings by the youngest member of the team.

Hurst finished with 4-36 for the home side.

Brentwood's opening bowlers Malcolm Horswill and Ben Churchill took three early wickets between them and Brentwood continued to work their way through the Hainault batting. Billy Calder (0-17) and Patil (0-14) bowled good spells without any luck but Richard Horswill (1-24), Daborn (1-23) and Jon Hilliard (2-21) were all successful.

However, Hainault's Hurst came to the crease with his team in trouble and threatened to take the game away from Brentwood. Hurst showed his class with a number of powerfully hit boundaries, but Malcolm Horswill returned to the attack and picked up the last two wickets, finally bowling Hurst for 50 to secure a well deserved victory for Brentwood. Horswill finished with 4-26 from 12.2 overs while Churchill had figures of 1-22 from his eight overs.

Gidea Park & Romford 5th XI - 241-9
Brentwood 6th XI - 132-9
Match Drawn

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood sixth team found a large Gidea Park total too much to chase but managed to hold out for a draw at Brentwood School.

Bowling first, Brentwood had some early success with Liam Farge taking two wickets and Richard Horswill and Peter Myers picking up a wicket apiece.

A run out left the visitors struggling but Anil Patel joined opener Ian Greenwood and these two built a big partnership with the experienced Greenwood in fine form, finding the boundary regularly as he went on to make his century.

Farge (2-28), Myers (1-25), Richard Horswill (1-29) and Malcolm Horswill (0-27) all bowled good spells and when Brentwood skipper Ken Hobbs came on to bowl in an effort to speed the declaration, he picked up four late wickets including those of Greenwood for 123 and Patel for 44. Hobbs finished with 4-38.

When Brentwood batted they lost wickets at regular intervals and never looked as though they could win the game. Gautam Datta hit six fours in a typically hard hit knock of 45 and Henry Nation found the boundary five times in his innings of 22. Anand Patel made 17 but it was left to Malcolm Horswill (11 not out) and Farge to see out the last few overs to secure the draw.

19th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 81 all out
Wanstead 5th XI - 84-0
Wanstead won by 10 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood inflicted Wanstead's only league defeat of the season so far when the two sides met in June but the league leaders were much the stronger side in this return match at Brentwood School .

Batting first, Brentwood found it hard going against some tight bowling from Chaudhry and Rathkrishnan and were 26-3 after 12 overs. Andy Maxwell and Alex Haynes then shared a good stand of 31 but when Haynes was out for 18 and Maxwell for 22, Brentwood collapsed to 81 all out with Chaudhry, 4-16, and Hassan, 3-13, the main wicket takers.

Brentwood's opening bowlers Dan O'Shaughnessy (0-11) and Richard Horswill (0-27) bowled well without any luck but Wanstead's accomplished opening batsmen, Hassan (55 not out) and Patel (23 not out), saw their side to an easy win.

26th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 147 all out
Old Parkonians 4th XI - 151-4
Old Parkonians won by 6 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood failed to make enough runs on an excellent batting pitch at Oakfield and succumbed to a six wicket defeat.

Brentwood lost the early wicket of Shreyas Moorti, caught down the leg side of the bowling of Chowdury, and James Woodward then joined Ken Hobbs. These two began to find the boundary regularly with Woodward in particularly good form and it looked as though Brentwood could reach their target of at least 200 and maximum batting points. But with the score on 84 Hobbs was out for 25 and Woodward was then dismissed in the next over for 46, an innings that contained 9 fours.

Brentwood now found batting a lot more difficult and wickets began to fell regularly. Only Anand Patil of the remaining batsmen made a significant contribution against the bowling of Bahra (2-30), Patel (3-19) and Weekes (2-9). When Patil was out for 31 the innings rapidly closed when Allbury came on to bowl and claimed the last two wickets in just four balls.

In reply the Old Parks batsmen got off to a good start but the introduction of Woodward's off spin gave some hope to Brentwood as he picked up three wickets, while young seamers Jon Hilliard (0-14) and Billy Calder (0-19) both bowled good spells from the other end.

Opening bat Allbury made 45 before being well caught in the deep by Jon Hilliard off the bowling of Woodward but Raval, 49 not out, saw Old Parks home with plenty of time to spare. Woodward finished with 3-57 and Andy Fryd (1-6) claimed the other wicket for Brentwood .

2nd August

Brentwood 6th XI - 212-8
Wanstead 6th XI - 177-9
Match Drawn

Report by Ken Hobbs

Despite making their highest total of the season, Brentwood 6th team could not quite force a win at Fords Sports ground, Newbury Park.

Brentwood chose to bat first on a pitch that looked as though it would be at its best early on and, after a slow start against some aggressive bowling, they lost the in-form James Woodward for 1.

Jon Hilliard joined Ken Hobbs and these two made steady progress until Hobbs was out for 26. Matt Yates then kept up the momentum with an innings of 23 while Hilliard batted extremely well for his 28 before he became the first victim for left arm spinner J. Patel with the score on 116.

Brentwood then began to lose wickets and when play was halted for fifteen minutes due to rain, they had slumped to 147 for 8 with Patel having the impressive figures at that stage of 7 overs, 5 for 3.

When play resumed the home side lost the initiative and Tom Harries and Andy Fryd put on 65 in an unbroken ninth wicket stand. Harries played some excellent cut shots in a knock of 40 not out, while Fryd found the leg side boundary regularly in his innings of 28 not out. The declaration came after 48 overs when Brentwood had passed 200 for the first time this season.

Wanstead opening bats Williams and Mahmood gave their team a solid start against some tight bowling by Jon Hilliard and Billy Calder. Debutant Ben Harries then came into the attack and kept up the pressure with a good spell and the breakthrough came when Mahmood was run out for 15 by a direct hit from Calder.

Off Spinner Woodward began a long spell but had to work hard for his wickets. He bowled Williams for 33 and Andy Fryd came on at the other end and picked up two wickets, including that of Malik who made 35. The bowlers got support from Stuart Fryd who took two good catches in the covers.

As Woodward took three more wickets, Wanstead's hopes of reaching the target diminished. Yates got the important wicket of Patel for 26, well caught by Dan Fryd, and Calder returned to claim his first wicket, bowling Fitzgerald for 10.

With Wanstead nine down, Woodward came back on to try and claim the tenth wicket but the last pair, Hasnaim and skipper Len Enoch, held out for the draw. Woodward finished with 4-64, and Calder had impressive figures of 8 overs, 3 maidens, 1 for 14.

Following the withdrawal of Hutton 5ths, Wanstead 6th XI had joined the league after the season had already started. Therefore, as the sides would only meet once, this match was worth double points, so Brentwood were able to claim a total of 24 bonus points from the game, although they were frustrated that they were not able to claim the full 40 points that a win would have given them.

16th August

Brentwood 6th XI - 119 allout
Hornchurch 5th XI - 177-9
Hornchurch won by 4 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Hornchurch came out on top in this low scoring game on a difficult pitch at the Met Police ground, Chigwell.

Brentwood were put into bat and found run scoring difficult but openers Jon Hilliard and Anand Patil survived the first nine overs. The introduction of change bowlers Frank Grann and Chris James saw Patil and Owen Mathias dismissed to leave Brentwood 22-2.

However, No. 4 Ollie Hembrough made batting looked relatively easy, hitting 6 fours in an innings of 38 before he was caught and bowled by James.

James continued to take wickets in a long spell of 20 overs and Brentwood were indebted to another sturdy knock by Jon Hilliard who was eventually out for 28. There was some good resistance down the order from Ben Harries who finished 7 not out as Brentwood were dismissed for 119 in the 56th over and failed to take any batting bonus points.

James took 5-32, Grann 3-36 and Stallard 2-28 for the home side.

Brentwood defended this small total well with some good spells from all their bowlers but opening bats Bill Stallard and Ben Spray gave their side a good start. Stallard was run out for 36 by a direct hit from Jon Hillard and Spray had also made 36 when he was caught by Mathias off the bowling of Ben Harries. Harries picked up three wickets in his second spell, the 12 year old finishing with impressive figures of 3-20 from eight overs.

Peter Myers (1-32) and Kristen Ali (1-16) were the other wicket takers as Brentwood made Hornchurch struggle for the win which finally came in the 38th over.
