U16's Match Play 2008

A CONVINCING WIN IN THE SEASON OPENER FOR BRENTWOOD U16

A humid afternoon and a greenish track. It looked like important toss to win for Brentwood Captain Will Ashby and win it he did, duly putting the Springfield opposition in to bat.

A fiery opening burst from Ross Cant yielded the opening wicket.Wickets fell regularly but with the ball swinging alarmingly the extras piled on. After 28 overs Springfield had ground their way to 92-7 with over 40 extras with notable bowling performances from Ben Sach 5-0-13-3, James Welham 8-0-27-2 and Liam Farge 3-0-16-2. Springfield mounted a rearguard attack and reached a creditable 161-8 off of their allot ed 40 overs.

Manager Ian Dawes demanded patient, partnership building; with the ball not coming on to the bat it was imperative to keep the ball down. Although not scoring many Jack Greenwood played his part in giving Brentwood a solid start, his partner Ben Sach went on to share a match winning 130 stand with James Welham for the second Wicket. Sach was bowled for a superb 43 near the death with Welham going on to remain undefeated on 77.

Ross Cant got the winning runs with 7.4 over remaining to achieve a convincing victory by seven Wickets.
