Nickname/s Obbzee, Chopper, Jack.
('Chopper' comes from when I was Saturday 3rd XI captain and had a reputation for ruthlessly axing
players from the team.)
Date of Birth 3rd March 1954
Bats Right-handed
Bowls Just a medium pacer really, with occasional away swing. But I
once managed to con Alan Houston into thinking I was an off spinner and
as such got a bowl nearly every week for most of the season, until he
finally sussed me out.
Specialist Fielding Position These days, wherever the ball is NOT
going, which is quite easy to arrange when you’re captain.
Best Batting 128 not out vs Ilford 2nds, 1979
Best Bowling 4 for 28 vs Hadleigh 3rds in about 1975
Previous Clubs None
Brentwood CC Member since 1969
On-field Club duties 6th XI Captain
Off-field Club duties Colts Manager
Little known personal fact Once 'starred' in a TV programme about skiing. I tell people it was called 'Ski Master Class' but it was actually with Jilly Goulden who was doing a programme about celebrities doing other jobs. She was a ski rep for Inghams in St. Anton for a week
and our group were asked to be her team as she guided us around the slopes. (To be honest I’d never heard of her before).
Sporting hero(es) I thought Colin Cowdrey was the master batsman when I
was young, Fred Trueman the best bowler, Gary Sobers the best all
rounder, closely followed by Botham. In football, Pele is usually top of my
list.

Worst Moment
Running out Mark Potter when he was only 12 years old. He burst into tears and I had to face the wrath of his Dad, Bernard, who was also the captain. To make things worse I then ran
out Geoff Eade in the same innings and when I was out my own team booed me off the field.
Most Memorable Match
In 1981 in one of my 1st team appearances. We were bowled out by Gidea Park & Romford for 89 at the Old County Ground but we bowled nearly 60 overs back at them, finally dismissing them for 79. Incredibly, just two bowlers bowled all those overs, Keith Goodman taking 6 for about 30 and Bill Bateman taking three wickets, with one run out. My contribution was about five runs and catching
Derek Churchill off Keith’s bowling but it was the most tense, exciting game I have ever played in with a great win to celebrate at the end.
