(Best Ever XI) The following, in my humble opinion is the best ever Brentwood side. Not that I am old enough to remember many of them (before anybody suggests otherwise), but based on historical research. (I must try to get out more).
Nine of them played County cricket; the other two played County 2nd XI. Six of them played for England.
Lucas (the first captain of Essex) and Kortright were a formidable pair of opening bowlers for club, county and country. They were also extremely close friends and legend has it that they are both buried in Fryerning churchyard, exactly 22 yards from each other.
Of the three 'modern' choices, Nick Knight needs no justification; Nigel Hilliard always gets me into the pavilion when Essex play at Colchester, and I couldn't think of another wicketkeeper to rival Peth, except Ben - and he would grizzle at having to bat at 10. Besides, his fingers wouldn't last five minutes against Kortright and Farnes.
(Modern XI) You will note that I have deliberately not chosen any overseas players. All England-qualified! Though I suppose Graeme Walker might be regarded as West Indian by residency. And I have maintained the theme of choosing a pair of inseparable mates - Cocklin and Crossley in this instance.
