Mixed U9s vs Essex U9s - Sunday 17th June 2007

Players from Brentwood:
  • Edward Abbott
  • James Berry
  • Matthew Bell
Four clubs Brentwood, Shenfield, Upminster and Hutton put together a team, 3 from each club, to play the Essex U9 on Sunday 17th June.

These 12 players have never played together before, so we had work on our hands from the beginning trying to sort out the team at its best. We met at Brentwood Cricket Club who hosted the event which started at 2pm.

We got the boys in the nets for a warm up at 12pm looking at their batting and bowling abilities, then did some fielding skills. During this time we decided to have two Captains Wil Chuter from Upminster and Edward Abbott from Brentwood. We decided that if we won the toss, we would let Essex bat first, we won and they batted.

They had two batsmen who scored 35 and 45, and ended up on 146 for 6 after 30 overs. Edward Abbott from Brentwood took two wickets. The bowling and fielding from the 12 players were excellent, and I think the Brentwood training had paid off on our Brentwood boys.

Sorting the batting order was difficult but we decided to open with two Upminster boys, they soon realised that the Essex attack was strong, and we only scored a few runs in the first 8 overs, before losing two wickets, Edward Abbott and James Berry from Brentwood were next to bat but unfortunately James was run out after a couple of balls, trying to push the score on, Edward lasted slightly longer scoring a few runs, Matthew Bell came in No. 8, but unfortunately we were all bowled out for 36 runs.

Although this was very disappointing, I think the boys learnt from the day, and had an experience at a higher level of cricket. I would just like to say to the three Brentwood boys, learn from the experience and take this to all your next games. Thank you also for looking so smart in your Brentwood shirts and caps. I am now looking forward to a rematch.
