Stock - 265-4
Brentwood Victorians - 252-6
Stock won by 12 runs
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
Brentwood Victorians 20th season started, belatedly, with an away game at Stock. After the midweek rain, the Victorians were greeted with sunshine as they arrived at Stock.
Victorians Vice Captain, Richard 'Trouty' Stroud, standing in as skipper in the absence of Trevor Coote, lost the toss and the Vics were in the field. Opening bowlers Joff Fernhead and Paul Degg bowled well in their opening spell without success. Trouty took the first wicket bowling Cory for 58. Stock put on 126 for the first wicket. Westwood joined Cottee and scored an aggressive 39 before being caught of the bowling of Mick Pinkney by Richard Walford.
Richard Walford on his way to 88 not out
Unfortunately chances were not being held as Ash Patel, Fernhead, and Walford failed to hold on to catches. Patel put in an early claim for the prestigious Victorians Comical Fielder of the Year for the 3rd year in succession. Bob O'Brien found his loose ball punished as he finished with one wicket. Trouty took a second wicket as Stock finished with a competitive 265. Fernhead was the pick of the bowlers finishing with excellent figures of 8 overs, 4 maidens, for only 9 runs.
In reply, Victorians openers Patel and Shane Surujbally added 106 for the first wicket. Surujbally out in the 20th over for 53. Patel followed 3 overs later for 42. Walford, batting at 3, made a steady start as he began to increase the scoring rate and gave the Victorians a chance of an unlikely victory. Needing 12 runs an over for the last 16 overs Walford formed partnerships with Mahadeo, 19, and Lewis, 9, which left the Victorians requiring 37 off the last 3 overs. Pinkney added 10 runs but was caught on the boundary in the penultimate over. The Victorians were to finish 13 runs short. Walford had taken the Victorians to the brink of an unlikely victory scoring 88 not out, including 7 sixes.
This was a great game of social Sunday cricket played with a great attitude by both sides. Next week the Victorians have their first home game.

South Woodford - 247-1
Brentwood Victorians - 248-7
Victorians won by 3 wickets
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians welcomed South Woodford to a picturesque OCG for their first home game of the season.
Stand in skipper Richard Walford won the toss and, to the disappointment of some, chose to field. Opening bowlers Dave Balroop and debutant Ronnie Saunders bowled well without success. Bob O'Brien replaced Balroop and had an early breakthrough as he had Wong caught behind by Des Alford. This was to be the Victorians only wicket as Taylor joined opener Piperdj and the pair added an unbeaten 212 for the second wicket. Piperj made an elegant 137 not out and found solid support from Taylor who finished 67 not out. Walford shuffled his bowling without success. The pick of the bowlers was Balroop, 8 overs for 26 runs.
Dave Balroop on his way to an unbeaten 114
In reply, the Victorians lost their first wicket in the 4th over when Ash Patel was bowled with only 8 on the board. Walford joined Shane Surujbally and the pair added 35 for the 2nd wicket before Walford was out caught for 10. Surujbally was out shortly after for 24. Roger Mahadeo added only 4 before Andy Taker joined Balroop and the pair started to take the game away from South Woodford as they began to increase the scoring rate. Taker was eventually out for 47, just short of a deserved half century. Balroop continued to dominate the bowling as he added 52 runs with Paul Degg, 12, on his way to his first century of the season. O'Brien fell for 6 before Mick Pinkney, 15 not out, joined Balroop and the pair knocked off the required runs to win the game with 4 overs to spare. Balroop not out for 114.
Next week the Victorians have a home fixture against Wickford.

Brentwood Victorians - 240-4
Wickford - 234-9
Victorians won by 6 runs
Report by Shane Surujbally
Brentwood Victorians were host to Wickford. Stand in Captain R. Stroud won the toss and decided to bat with his 10 men team. D. Alford opened with S. Surujbally, and it was short lived as Alford was bowled for 2. R. Mahadeo joined Surujbally and started to rebuild. The pair put on a partnership of 85. Surujbally soon brought up his chanceless 50. Mahadeo eventually went for 24. K. Ali was in for a brief moment as he was caught for 4. This brought to the crease his father S. Ali. He did not waste any time by showing some powerful strokes hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. Surujbally was very cautious getting nearer to his magic figure. Finally Surujbally reached his century consisting of 14 - 4's and 1- 6. This was an excellent performance to some tight bowling. Surujbally was then bowled by L. Deller for 103. Ali then continued to charge with D. Smith joining him at the crease. Eventually Ali ended on 68 not out and Smith 21 not out. The Vics total ended on 241 for 4.
Shane Surujbally
Wickford started positive until B. O'Brien held on to a caught and bowled . Opening batsman L.Letch held the innings together. Danger man L. Deller came to the crease but was short lived as he was brilliantly bowled by J. Fernhead for 10. D. Rouse joined Letch who began to excel to the winning target. The turning point of the game was when Letch was bowled by a pumped up J. Fernhead for 86. The Vics secret weapon R. Stroud decided to join the game by bowling a great spell and getting rid of Rouse for 52. The game started getting close with Wickford needing only 10 runs in the last over. The Vics managed to contain them and winning by 6 runs. Bowling figures were J. Fernhead 2 for 35, B. O'Brien 2 for 31, S. Ali 1 for 24, K.Ali 1 for 32, R. Stroud 2 for 48.

Brentwood Victorians - 353-2 declared
Herongate - 165 all out
Victorians won by 188 runs
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians welcomed back skipper Trevor Coote as they made the short trip to Herongate. Faced with an under strength Herongate side, Coote won the toss and chose to bat.
With Herongate only having 9 players, two Victorians fielded for Herongate until their missing players arrived. Unfortunately for Herongate, one of the fielders was Bob O'Brien who dropped opener Andy Taker when he had scored only 4 runs. Taker went on to a magnificent 185. His opening partner, Roger Mahadeo, made a career best 119 as the pair added 270 for the first wicket, a Victorian record. It was a pulsating performance by the Victorian openers as Taker hit 22 4's and 10 6's and Mahadeo 16 4's and 5 6's. Mick Pinkney, having been padded up for over 2 hours, replaced Mahadeo when he was eventually caught for 119, and added 83 with Taker for the 2nd wicket before Taker was bowled by Fletcher for 185. Coote declared the Victorian innings with 3 overs to go as Pinkney finished 25 not out.
Roger Mahadeo and Andy Taker who put on a record-breaking opening partnership of 270 for the Victorians vs Herongate
Opening bowler Bob O'Brien made an immediate breakthrough when he bowled Herongate opener Tozer for a duck. Amazingly, Ash Patel had Dixon caught by Taker and took his 1st wicket in 3 years. O'Brien then bowled Witchell and Herongate were struggling at 28-3. Coote decided to give all the Victorians a game as he offered a bowling chance to Des Alford. Thankfully Coote excluded himself from this process! Alford took his first wicket since 1994. Joff Fernhead bowled a good spell and Richard Stroud took 1 wicket from 3 overs for 8 runs. Pinkney took 4 cheap wickets for 36 runs before Mahadeo capped an excellent performance by taking the last wicket as Taker held his 3rd catch.
Next week the Victorians expect a more competitive game as they travel to Hertford.

Brentwood Club XI - 222-6
Victorians - 225-6
Victorians won by 4 wickets
Report by Mick Pinkney
As the finale of the Victorians 20th Season Celebrations Weekend, the Victorians had a 30 over game against a Brentwood Club XI. After a weekend of partying, the Vics took to the field and were grateful to Paul Degg who took 3 wickets, including the prize scalp of Jonathon Walford, in a fiery opening spell. Neil Jones replaced Walford and began to take the game away from the Vics as he constructed an aggressive innings. Des Alford, told by Trevor Coote that he would never take another Victorian wicket, had colt R Horswill LBW to a ball Horswill will probably never face again in his cricketing career. M Bell replaced Horswill, and batted with great maturity before being caught behind for 27. Ben Cocklin continued his good form from the previous days 20/20 as he added 29 from 16 balls. Cocklin's innings, although impressive, deprived Jones of a deserved century as he finished 97 not out.
Brentwood Victorians vs Brentwood Club XI
In reply, the Club XI made an early breakthrough as both David Smith and Shane Surujbally fell cheaply. Roger Mahadeo added 22, LBW to Cocklin, which allowed Dave Balroop to join Paul Degg as the pair added 95 for the 5th wicket. Degg was caught by Horswill off the bowling of K Ali after adding 75 off 34 balls. Paul Webb was especially pleased to see the fall of Degg as Degg had scored 23 off his first over. Dave Balroop, 50 off 36 balls, kept the Victorians ahead for the required run rate as Mick Pinkney joined Ash Patel and the pair looked to secure an early victory before the rain and light closed in. Patel was needlessly run out for 19 but it allowed Des Alford to score the winning run with 2.3 overs to spare. Pinkney 22 not out. It was a fitting conclusion to the weekend's celebrations.
The weekend started with a golf day at Weald Park Golf Club. Thanks to the 31 who took part and congratulations to Greg 'The Bandit' Holmes who won with 39 points!
Saturday night was party night as the clubhouse was packed with 150 people. Great music was provided by 31X featuring Victorian Dave Terrell on drums.
Sunday was another brilliant day as the OCG was bathed in sunshine, music, and good cricket for the 20/20 competition
Thanks to all who took part, attended, or supported the 20th Season Celebrations. I would like to personally thank Pat and Roger who do so much work behind the scenes to ensure events like this are a success. Finally, thanks to Des Alford and his company MEL (Health and Safety) Consultants Ltd who generously sponsored the weekend.

South Weald - 254-5
Victorians - 226-8
South Weald won by 28 runs
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians made the short trip to South Weald for their first game in 3 weeks. Skipper Trevor Coote lost the toss and the Victorians were in the field.
Richard Walford
Paul Degg opened the bowling and the South Weald openers, Davey and Warne, found it difficult to cope with his pace. Davey was to find the bowling from the other end much more accommodating as he raced to his half century. Richard Stroud in particular had a torrid time as his first over went for 16 runs. Stroud, who spent 15 years at South Weald, then advised Coote that he never bowled well up hill! Mick Pinkney came on at the Pavilion end and matched Stroud as his first over also went for 16 runs. Pinkney did, however, claim the prize wicket of Davey, 86, well caught by Degg at long on. Pinkney then bowled Hull and had opener Warne dropped by keeper Des Alford when he was on 33. Stroud, now bowling downhill, bowled Chambers. Degg returned to the attack and bowled Warne, 89, and Painter as the South Weald innings closed on 254. Degg only conceded 15 runs off his 8 overs.
Shane Surujbally
Needing over 6 runs an over, the Victorians needed a good start but lost an early wicket when David Smith was caught in the 7th over. Richard Walford joined Shane Surujbally and the pair added 71 for the 2nd wicket before Surujbally was needlessly run out after scoring a typically aggressive 51. Alford, 15, and Degg, 20, formed brief partnerships with Walford as the Victorians kept up with the run rate. Walford was eventually out for 53. The required run rate began to increase as Greg Holmes, Stroud and Pinkney fell cheaply. Trevor 'protect my average' Coote finished 29 not out as the innings came to a close with the Victorians 28 runs adrift.

Woodham Mortimer - 137 all out
Victorians - 141-1
Victorians won by 9 wickets
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
Woodham Mortimer travelled to the OCG to face one of the strongest Victorian teams in recent years, but not ever.......ever. Withdrawals left skipper Trevor Coote with only 6 players from the previous week's defeat at South Weald. Coote used the excellent turn out at the midweek 20/20 game to his advantage as he coerced (bribed) 4 Club players to make their Victorian debut.
Also making his debut was ex-Brentwood wicket keeper Martin Pether, who made a welcome return to the OCG.
Andy Taker, Trevor Coote, Jonathan Walford, and Martin Pether
Coote lost the toss, and to his surprise, Woodham Mortimer chose to bat. Paul Degg opened the bowling and the Woodham Mortimer openers found it difficult to cope with his pace. Neil Jones, a debutant, went for 23 off his 4 overs. The introduction of veteran Victorians Mick Pinkney and Joff Fernhead stemmed the flow of runs. Pinkney bowled his 8 overs for only 20 runs and Fernhead for only 25 runs. Fernhead also took 4 wickets.
Veteran Ash Patel replaced Pinkney but the Woodham Mortimer batsmen found his mix of long hops and full tosses to their liking as they plundered 28 runs off his 4 overs. Andy Taker then bowled with great control as his 3 overs only cost 6 runs. Debutant Ryan Barker closed out the innings as he took 3 wickets for 12 runs. Degg bowled 8 overs for only 11 runs.
Jonathan Walford
Jonathon Walford, after his mixed performance in the field, opened the Victorians reply with Pether and immediately began to dominate the Woodham Mortimer attack as he reached his 50 in 36 balls. Walford went on to record his century off only 65 balls as he was to finish 103 not out. His innings included 18 4's and 1 6. Pether was the only wicket to fall but he provided solid support to Walford in their 130 run partnership. Roger Mahadeo had a brief cameo as he hit a straight 6 to win the game.
Next week the Victorians travel to Theydon Bois.

Theydon Bois - 179 all out
Victorians - 180-6
Victorians won by 4 wickets
Report by Joe Earley
Scorecard
A changed Brentwood team containing only one regular Vic's player, Ash Patel, managed to win convincingly with 3 overs to spare.
Brentwood faced a strong Theydon Bois team and began the game in the field. The game started slowly with Holmes and Barker opening the bowling with Holmes forced to stop due to agonising shin splints, yet he soldiered on in true Vics fashion and managed to run in the field for his team.
Inspiring fielding from the debutant Webster kept team spirit on a high with boundaries coming few and far between. It wasn't until the ancient captain, Ash Patel, made the tactical decision of bringing on the spinners that the game shifted into Brentwood's control. Lingma's flight brought several players up the wicket giving Lyne 3 easy stumpings as the stand-in keeper, and ending with 4 wickets from only 5 overs going for 16 runs. Earley took the other end with instant success taking 2 wickets in his first and only two balls wrapping up the innings thanks to 2 superb catches from Webster. It was another day where the extras top scored on a bug infested pitch.
After the switch around it was Brentwood's turn to apply the pressure with Datta attacking from the start but ending with 13 runs. Webster was in at 3 making a quick-fire 30 smashing the ball around with Earley starting slow. Barker was the next batsman to put in a big effort but in his jug avoiding performance of 47, he was caught hitting big at deep mid-wicket.
Holmes and Lingma battled in the final partnership to give the Vics a good win against a tough Theydon team full of banter and South Africans; proving the Brits can beat them at some sports!!

Victorians - 243-7
Chadwell Heath - 136 all out
Victorians won by 107 runs
Report by Mick Pinkney
Scorecard
Chadwell Heath visited the OCG as the summer heat wave continued. Skipper Trevor Coote finally won a toss and chose to bat.
Coote decided to mix up the batting order and gave an opportunity to Des Alford and Joff Fernhead to open. Fernhead will probably be back in rightful position next week as he was the first wicket to fall in the 8th over after adding only 9. Alford scored an aggressive 38. The Victorians wee finding it difficult to score off an accurate Chadwell Heath attack and were only on 77 off the first 20 overs as Shane Surujbally, 21, and Roger Mahadeo, 7, struggled to increase the scoring rate. After Greg Holmes, 4, also fell cheaply, the ageless Ash Patel was joined by Paul Degg and the pair added 91 for the 6th wicket. Degg was eventually caught (and stumped!) after a typically aggressive 43 from 30 balls. Patel went on to finish 57 not out. Coote also added a quick 20 as the innings came to a close.
Des Alford
Surprisingly, Coote chose to open the bowling with Mick Pinkney and Richard Stroud and Pinkney made an immediate impact having Chapman stumped by Alford in the 3rd over. Amazingly, wickets continued to fall as the Chadwell Heath batsman couldn't resist Pinkney's flighty deliveries as they offered virtually catching practice to the Victorian fielders. Holmes, Welham, Surujbally and Fernhead all taking good catches. Pinkney finished with 6 wickets from his 8 overs. James Welham took 2 wickets from 6 overs and Degg finished the innings with his 2nd wicket having Chadwell Heath number 11 Barnes well caught by Pinkney at 2nd slip.
I would like to say that Pinkney's 6 wicket haul ranked amongst the best bowling performances in the Victorians 20 year history. The mix of flight, prodigious turn, impeccable length, steep bounce was, at times, unplayable. Unfortunately, the truth is that it was a mix of wides (loads of wides!), full tosses (quite a few of them as well!), and long hops. Hopefully the true nature of the bowling performance will be forgotten when it comes to the end of season awards!

Victorians - 242 all out
Woodford Wells - 245-2
Woodford Wells won by 8 wickets
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians travelled to Woodford Wells to play their Sundays 1's but found themselves on the 2nd pitch due to a Matchplay game on the main ground. Skipper Richard Stroud won the toss and chose to bat.
Roger Mahadeo and Mick Pinkney opened the batting but Mahadeo was caught behind in the first over for only 4 runs. Richard Walford joined Pinkney but the pair only added 35 when Pinkney, 25, was caught in the 10th over. Walford, 13, was bowled which allowed the evergreen Ash Patel to join young colt Sam Dawes and the pair started to repair the innings. Dawes was dismissive of any loose ball as he reached a deserved half century. Patel, 23, was replaced by Sam Ali and Ali raced to 22 off 11 balls before being needlessly run out. Wickets continued to fall, Kristen Ali, 10, Des Alford, 3, leaving the Victorians on 178 for 8 off 30 overs.
Joff Fernhead then added a run a ball 17 leaving Bob O'Brien to join Stroud for an important last wicket stand. The pair added 41 for the 10th wicket before Stroud was out in the last over. Stroud out for a fine 43. 242 would be a competitive score on most grounds, but the consensus at tea was that the Victorians were 100 runs short of a par score.
It needed some inspirational captaincy from Stroud when the Victorians took to the field but, unfortunately, Stroud took his inspiration from the 1st World War as he chose to send all his troops over the top rather than himself! With only a couple of exceptions, the Victorian bowlers were hit all over the park as the Wells' batsman took full advantage of the short boundaries. The exceptions were Sam Dawes and Kristen Ali who both bowled with great control. In contrast the rest of the Victorians bowlers went for an average of 9.5 per over. Only 2 wickets were taken, Fernhead bowling opener Brown, 82, and Dawes having opener Briggs well caught by Fernhead for 57.
The fall of the 2nd wicket allowed Hasan Chowdhury to come to the crease and he struck the match winning innings, 58 not out, including 28 off Fernhead's last over, a Victorians record! Woodford Wells won the game with 10 overs to spare.
Next week the Victorians host Chadwell Heath for the 2nd time this season.

Victorians - 335-0 declared
Chadwell Heath - 240-4
Victorians won by 95 runs
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians record breaking 20th Season continued as they welcomed Chadwell Heath to the OCG for the second time this season. Chadwell Heath had let it be known that they were bringing along a stronger side after their 107 run loss only two weeks earlier so Victorians Captain Trevor Coote invited Aaron West to make his Victorian debut. Also making welcome returns were Ian Bellchamber, Peter Bainbridge and Sam Ali. Coote won the toss and chose to bat.
Shane Surujbally opened with West and West was dropped with the score on 12. It was to be a costly drop! After a cautious start, the pair began to dominate the Chadwell Heath bowling as they began to increase the scoring rate. The first hundred came off 16 overs, the second hundred off 10 overs and the third hundred off only 8 overs as the pair shattered the Victorians record for the highest partnership. West also broke Surujbally's own individual record as he closed on 206 not out.
Surujbally made a chanceless century as he finished on 102 not out when Coote declared after 38 overs. West's innings included 27 4's and 6 6's. Another notable record was claimed by Coote as he umpired twice!
Chadwell Heath needed a good start if they were going to stand any chance of victory but Bainbridge made an early breakthrough. Although a mixed fielding display followed, Chadwell Heath were always behind the required run rate. Ali took 2 wickets which included a very sharp slip catch by Coote and Richard Stroud took the last wicket to fall. Stroud, who avoided the carnage at Woodford Wells the previous week when he chose not to bowl, saw his last over go for 24 runs.
Chadwell Heath 95 runs short at the close of play.

Little Baddow - 214-3
Little Baddow won by 7 wickets
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
After winning the toss, skipper Trevor Coote gave Des Alford the opportunity to open with Roger Mahadeo. The new look partnership started well as they raced to 55 off the first 8 overs.
Roger Mahadeo
Unfortunately the brakes were then applied to the partnership, and the innings, as the pair only added 15 off the next 10 overs before Mahadeo was out (36), Alford (29) followed next over. The ageless Ash Patel joined James Lyne and the pair added 95 for the 3rd wicket before Patel retired out for a well struck 53. Lyne (51) added a further 31 with Mick Pinkney. Pinkney, 21 not out, and Shane Surujbally , 10 not out, helped the Victorians post a total of 212.
In reply, the Victorians took 2 early wickets as V Lingala and Richard Stroud left Little Baddow reeling at 10 for 2. Cole joined Vickery and the pair added 154 for the 3rd wicket to all but secure victory. Cole was unlucky to be run out. Cole went on to make a chanceless 123 not out as Little Baddow cantered to victory with 7 overs to spare.

Victorians - 261-5
Navestock - 210-2
Victorians won by 51 runs
40 over game
Report by Mick Pinkney
Trevor Coote won the toss again and chose to bat. Shane Surujbally, 17, opened with Mick Pinkney, 13, but both fell victim to Navestock first change bowler Johns. Richard Stroud was caught for only 3 as the Victorian innings made a stuttering start. Roger Mahadeo joined James Welham and the pair added 147 and took the game away from Navestock. The fall of Mahadeo, 45, allowed Lyne the opportunity to secure the dubious honour of the season’s first duck! Coote replaced Lyne and looked certain to score a well deserved 50 before pulling up lame with an injured fetlock. In the meantime Welham had raced to his 2nd Victorian century as he finished 121 not out.
Roger Mahadeo
261 looked a competitive total and Navestock found it difficult to keep up with the required run rate. Despite Joff Fernhead and, surprisingly, Ash Patel taking early wickets, the Victorians failed to press home their early advantage as catches were dropped. Navestock opener Scott made a deserved century and Langstone 52 not out but Navestock were always behind the required run rate and they were 52 runs short at the close of their innings.
