Brentwood Victorians - 169 for 8
Navestock - 90 all out
Victorians won by 79 runs
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians opened the season on a damp overcast day at the OCG. Skipper Dave Balroop lost the toss and was invited to bat in a 35 over game.
Openers Mac McIntyre and Shane Surujbally got off to a watchful start posting just 20 off the first 10 overs. The combination of a damp wicket and a long wet outfield did not make scoring easy despite shortened boundaries. Both batsmen accelerated and the score reached 91 after 20 overs. Surujbally retired after a chanceless 50. Joff Fernhead contributed 24, Dave Balroop 16, and Des Alford 20 not out, helping the Victorians to score a competitive 169 off their 35 overs.
In reply opening bowlers Chris Jolly and Sam Zealey bowled an excellent line and the Navestock openers found scoring difficult. Zealey made the breakthrough in the 4th over with Mick Pinkney taking a sharp catch at first slip. Wicket keeper Des Alford then held a sharp chance off an inside edge leaving Navestock at 19 for 2. Jolly was to finish conceding only 11 runs off his 7 overs and was unlucky not to take any wickets. Wickets continued to fall thanks to excellent Victorians' fielding. Mac McIntyre held a sharp catch off Bob O'Brien. O'Brien was to finish with 2 wickets. Debut Victorian Rob 'Chappy' Knebeg took 3 wickets thanks to 2 excellent catches at 2nd slip from McIntyre. Joff Fernhead took 1 wicket off his 3 overs by bowling the dangerous Jordan. Mick Pinkney helped to restrict the scoring by conceding only 8 off his 4 overs. With 10 overs left Navestock needed an unlikely 8 per over but Zealey returned to the attack and took the last 2 wickets finishing with 4 wickets in total.
Both sides are to be congratulated the sporting way this game was conducted. The Victorians are looking forward to the return fixture later in the season.

Horndon - 252 for 6
Victorians - 229 all out
Victorians lost by 23 runs
Report by Ash Patel
This 40 over match started with Horndon winning the toss and electing to bat. Joyce (85) and Hubbard (44) looked quality batsmen at this level and put on 74 for the first wicket with the Vics seamers taking some stick. Horndon were racing along at well over 6 an over but the spinners Patel and O'Brien
put on the brakes somewhat as well as taking a few wickets. With the spinners bowled out it was left to the seamers to keep the run rate down but some lusty hitting by Ponsonby (75) set the Vics a difficult run chase.
Vics hopes took a dent as Surujbally was out the 3rd over but Mahadeo (32) and Donkin (108) steadied the ship. When Mahadeo went Vics middle order did not contribute too much to the score. Donkin found an able partner in Fearhead as they took the score on nicely and Vics were smelling victory. With Fernhead departing for a fine 55 the pressure was on Donks but he and the tail subsided quite quickly as Vics lost by 23 runs. This match will be remembered for a superb 108 by man of the match Mark Donkin.

Victorians - 144 for 7
Blackheath - 97 all out
Victorians won by 47 runs
Report by Ash Patel
For some reason captain Trevor Coote decided to play a 35 over match but it seemed that a test match was taking place when a strong Blackheath took the field. Alford was out quickly for a duck and Mahadeo and Surujbally followed shortly after, Vics were now 31-3 after 17 overs - under 2 an over with half the overs gone. Nick Childs (39) and Keith Macintyre (31) batted well to take the score on to 75 after 25 overs. Acceleration was required now but in trying to play forcing shots Childs, Macintyre, Balroop, Coote all perished however a quick fire 24 off 18 balls by Ash the Bash saw the Vics reach 144 of their 35 over allocation.
Blackheath fielding 1st/2nd XI players must have thought they were favourites to win. They started well as Fernhead bowled a few loose deliveries and was punished so he was replaced quickly by Bob O'Brien who took 3 wickets for 16 in his 5 over spell. With Ash Patel also taking a caught and bowled Blackheath went from 26-0 to 52-4. Vics tails were up and the seamers took over as Chris Jolly (1-16) bowled his best spell for a long time and the dependable Dave Balroop had a short lucrative spell 3-12 off 4 overs. The returning Fearnhead also got in to the act by taking 2-25. Blackheath were all out
for a surprisingly low feeble score of 97. Trevor Coote Marshalled the troops superbly as the Vics looked a good professional outfit, although a few simple catches were put down during Blackheath innings.

Herongate - 229 for 4
Victorians - 103 all out
Herongate won by 126 runs
Report by Mick Pinkney
The previous week's exploits of 'Ash the Bash' were obviously noticed by Club Captain Richard Whitehall as he was called up to the 1st team for their cup match with Bishops Stortford. Unfortunately it left the already short Victorians with only 9 players as they arrived at Herongate. The Victorians were indebted to the sporting attitude of the Herongate skipper Patrick who happily allowed 2 Herongate colts to play for the Victorians.
Herongate won the toss and chose to bat on an overcast chilly day. At tea the Victorians felt they had done well to restrict Herongate to only 229 off 40 overs. With a short boundary and a history of high scores at the ground a target of 230 should have been easily attainable. Unfortunately only Roger Mahadeo showed any application scoring a commendable 59. 5 Victorians, Pinkney, Benton, Alford, Chappy, and O'Neill all made ducks.
We look forward to welcoming Herongate to the OCG later in the season for, hopefully, a more even contest.

Leigh-on-Sea - 155 all out
Victorians - 120 all out
Victorians lost by 35 runs
Report by Shane Surujbally
Only a miserable and wet Sunday the Victorians were host to Leigh on Sea. What appeared to be tricky pitches, Leigh on sea were invited to bat first. This proved to be a correct decision as Leigh on sea were 55 for 7. Some excellent bowling and fielding by the Victorians helped the position that Leigh on sea were in by some smart catching by Dave Balroop, which could earn him catch of the season. And Chris Jolly taking 4 wickets. The Victorians found it difficult to uproot the tail enders. Eventually Leigh on sea ended on 155 all out. This was a mammoth task to chase taking into consideration the pitches condition.
With a variable pitch it made it difficult for the Victoriana to bat on. At one Stage the Victorians were 22 for 8. The only resistant came from skipper Trever Coote and Joff Fernhead. Coote played the anchor role and batted for the duration of the innings and was out for a very good 37. Fernhead who has improved as the seasons go by, played a cameo innings by scoring a magnificent 60 not out. Unfortunately it was not enough as the Victorians were bowled out for 120.

Victorians - 160-9
Victorians lost by 31 runs
(40 over match)

Little Waltham - 188 all out
Victorians - 190-6
Victorians won by 4 wickets
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians travelled to a hot and humid Little Waltham hoping skipper Trevor Coote would win the toss and bat. Coote called incorrectly and the Victorians were inserted in the field. Openers Dave Balroop and Joe Surtees bowled with great pace but were unable to break a stubborn 1st wicket stand. Coote turned to Rob Benton, making a welcome return, who rewarded his skipper by bowling Lee in his first over. Ash Patel also came on and beat the bat repeatedly without success. Bob O'Brien replaced Patel but neither he, nor Benton, were able to remove Milburn who was threatening to help Little Waltham post a challenging target. Patel came back into the attack with instant success as he had Milburn caught at mid off by Mick Pinkney. Milburn had scored an impressive 81. O'Brien returned to the attack and had more success in his second spell. Pinkney replaced a tiring Benton. Benton, O'Brien and Pinkney were to finish with 3 wickets each. Alex Priddle was outstanding behind the stumps taking one excellent catch and being very close with a stumping.
Openers Roger Mahadeo and Mark Donkin got off to solid start hitting 29 off the first 5 overs. Donkin's old bat did not have the strength to clear the covers where he was comfortably caught. Surtees joined Mahadeo and these two shared a partnership of 102 for the 2nd wicket in only 12 overs. Mahadeo eventually falling for an elegant 45. The Victorians were apparently cruising to a comfortable victory. Shane Surujbally fell cheaply before Surtees was out for 70 when a century looked certain. Priddle and Balroop made little contribution as the Victorians were stumbling at 172 for 6. Veterans Coote and Pinkney kept their heads as Coote finished 21 not out leaving Pinkney to score the winning run.
This was an excellent all round performance by the Victorians. The game was played in the traditional sporting Victorian way both on, and off, the field. The Victorians look forward to welcoming Little Waltham to the OCG later in the season for the return fixture.

Victorians - 214-6
South Weald - 214-7
Match Tied
Report by Mick Pinkney
The Victorians made the short journey to South Weald for what proved to be one of the best games of the season so far. Skipper Trevor Coote finally won a toss and elected to bat. Keith McIntyre was promoted up the order and responded with his best performance of the season eventually falling for an entertaining 79. McIntyre was supported by debutant Richard Waford (18), Mick Pinkney (20) and Coote (26 no). Des Alford had a welcome return to form with a brisk 27. The pick of the South Weald bowlers was Single who bowled with accuracy and pace and finished with figures of 2 for 28.
South Weald opener Sharma dominated the reply with a deserved 81 but for most of the game South Weald were behind the required run rate. Pinkney then took the wicket which so very nearly cost the Victorians the game by allowing Single to come to the crease. Single tore into the Victorians attack added 46 off only 5 overs. Ash Patel made the breakthrough having Single caught at long off by Walford. Chris Jolly then had opener Sharma caught behind by Alford leaving South Weald requiring 50 off the last 10 overs. Weald kept up with the run rate and required 5 off the last over to be bowled by Joff Fernhead. Fernhead's first ball was a wide and the next ball went for 2 byes. Weald levelled the score off the penultimate ball needing a single off the last to win. Fernhead was to have the final say by catching South Weald skipper Stuart.
A tie was the best result for a game played in the best spirit.

Due to a reduced over game the Vics won the toss and decided to bat first. The Vics got off to a flyer with Shane Surujbally (20) and Ash Patel (18) putting on a quick partnership. Herongate - 142 all out
Victorians - 146-3
Victorians won by 7 wickets
Report by Richard Walford
Herongate were the visitors to the OCG and on winning the toss elected to bat first. However, due to the Victorian's tight bowling and an excellent fielding display, the batsmen found runs hard to come by with only Luthra (37) and Palmer passing 20. The wickets were shared around with Dave Moisan, Keith McIntyre and Ash Patel taking 2 wickets apiece. The highlights of an excellent Vic's bowling display were two outstanding catches, from McIntyre and Stuart Mee, off of their own bowling.
Herongate's total looked low on a good batting wicket and in response, opening bat Shane Surujbally, tucked into the Herongate attack with relish. Surujbally eventually departed for 58 out of an opening stand of 83 with Roger Mahadeo (39). The introduction of spin slowed proceedings and in turn produced 2 wickets in quick succession, but skipper Trevor Coote (22 not out) and Dave Balroop saw their team home with 10 overs to spare.

23rd July
Victorians - 258-4
Little Waltham - 259-9
Little Waltham won by 1 wicket
Report by Richard Walford
Brentwood entertained Little Waltham at the OCG and on winning the toss, acting Vic's skipper Ash Patel opted to bat first on what looked to be an excellent batting track.
Openers Keith McIntyre and Roger Mahadeo started watchfully, taking the score to 58 until McIntyre departed in the 12th over. Richard Walford (36) joined Mahadeo at the crease and together they upped the tempo putting on 69 before both were out caught in quick succession, Mahadeo posting a solid 52. New batsmen Shane Surujbally and Dave Moisan both struggled to score freely against the spin of Weatherley and Coyle, but on the reintroduction of pace, both upped the tempo and soon Little Waltham were chasing the ball to all corners of the OCG. Surujbally finished on an aggressive 86 not out off of only 70 balls and was well supported by Moisan's 30. Their partnership of 107 in just 13 overs taking the Vic's to a decent total.
Little Waltham's reply got off to a poor start with paceman Chris Jolly (2-33) removing Johnson with the first ball of the innings and within just a few overs they had been reduced to 12 for 4. Weatherly joined Gurney at the crease and immediately set about the bowling with relish, smashing a quickfire 54 until he tried one big hit too many and skied a catch to wicketkeeper Dave Terrell. Gurney however, continued to bat sensibly and was well supported by Egleton (27). The partnership of 120 for the 7th wicket was the turning point of the match with the Vic's unable to get the crucial breakthrough and the batsmen finding the boundary frequently.
With only 10 more runs required off of 24 balls Vic's skipper Patel seemed to have run out of ideas. In desperation, he threw the ball to Walford and invited him to bowl his unique version of off spin. The first ball yorked Gurney for an excellent 138 and then Terrell stumped Williams to give Walford a double wicket maiden. Walford trapped Egleton LBW in his next over and with the last pair at the crease 2 runs were required from the last over. Despite a huge mix up between the batsmen, the 2 runs were scrambled, thus ending the Victorians 6 game unbeaten run. Walford finished with figures of 3 for 3 off of 2 overs.

Woodford Wells - 175 all out
Victorians - 176-8
Victorians won by 2 wickets
Report by Richard Walford
Brentwood Victorians travelled to Woodford and on losing the toss were invited to field first. Seamers Joff Fernhead and Chris Jolly bowled tightly, but Wells opener Sims (71) was soon playing expansive shots all round the wicket. Sims was removed in the 20th over and a large total seemed likely with the score being 107 for 2. However, the second half of the innings saw an excellent fielding and bowling display from Vic's young and old and resulted in the last 8 wickets falling for just 75 runs, Keith McIntyre and Chris Jolly finishing with 3 wickets apiece. A special mention must go to Roger Mahadeo who managed to take 3 excellent catches and perform numerous stops in the outfield despite being totally incapacitated by a raging hangover.
Wells opened up with spin at both ends and as Brentwood's reply got off to a poor start, stuttering to 25 for 3 in the 13th over. However, Alex Priddle (52) batted sensibly whilst wickets continued to fall at the other end and once McIntyre came to the crease the pair set about posting the first major partnership of the innings. The end of Priddle's fine innings prompted some rash shots from the lower order, but McIntyre kept his nerve to steer his side home in the penultimate over, finishing on 38 not out.
