2nd May

Brentwood Victorians - 192
Horndon-on-the-Hill - 129 all out
Brentwood Victorians won by 63 runs

After a poor start the Vics were in some trouble at 24-3, but with a spectacular 29 from Dave Balroop and an inspired innings from Mark Donkin (70) the Vics were back on track. The tail chipped in with Dave Terrell stylishly maintaining last seasons form with 13 not out taking the Vics to 192.

Horndon started badly after marathon bowling performances by Robert O'Brien and Jof Fernhead (4 and 3 wickets respectively) reduced them to 33-6. After a stoic display of batting from the tail Horndon finally succumbed - O'Brien, Fernhead, Ash Patel and Trevor Coote applying the coup de grace. The Victorians finished comfortable winners by 63 runs.

16th May

Herongate - 242-4
Brentwood Victorians - 241 all out
Herongate won by 6 wickets

Report by Mick Pinkney

On an ideal batting wicket the Victorians could only manage 241, with no one reaching 50. Only Roger Mahadeo with 46 looked likely to reach that target. Despite brief cameos from Trevor Coote (33), Dave Balroop (33) and Bob O'Brien (21 not out), the total of 241 never seemed enough.

In a fractious game Herongate scored freely, Pettard (96) and S. Manns (78) being the pick of their batsman. To add to the Vics woes two players were injured in the field, Mick Pinkney (back) and Keith McIntyre (ankle). On a lighter note a massive six by one of the Herongate batsmen resulted in a barbecue in one of the local residents back garden nearly being demolished!

23rd May

Hutton - 211-4
Brentwood Victorians - 134 all out
Hutton won by 77 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

Ex Victorian Danny Cocklin led Hutton to victory on a day more memorable for the amount of injuries sustained by the Victorians than the standard of cricket on display.

Hutton won the toss and batted with Wright, J Smith, R Smith, and Bull scoring the bulk of the runs while cruising to 211-4 with the Victorians effectively reduced to eight fit players. Already one short, Mick Pinkney (back) and Chris Jolly (back) were virtually spectators for most of the game.

Although the Victorians batted valiantly it wasn't long before the openers were out. Although the tailenders hung on the result was never in doubt.

6th June

Brentwood Victorians - 278-4
Writtle - 204 all out
Victorians won by 74 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

On a very hot and humid day with no breeze, Brentwood once again managed to lose the toss and the Vics were put in to bat. The opening partnership of Surujbally (Captain) and Balroop proved not only entertaining but fruitful.

Surujbally scoring 52 and Balroop 148 n.o. ably assisted by McKintyre and O'Brien. The Vics finished on 278-4 this was easily the best batting performance of the season so far.

Writtle set off at a blistering pace on a wicket that gave nothing away. After overs from Fearnhead and O'Brien getting no luck at all Balroop came on to bowl and pinned Writtle back. O'Brien then also came on again this time from the other end and in his last over, reaped the rewards for some intelligent bowling with a wicket maiden and from then on Writtle never looked like catching up. Eaton also on form with 2 wickets l.b.w. and a stumping (Terrell) finishing off a fine fielding display by the Vics.

The Vics won by 74 runs.

13th June

Brentwood Victorians - 237-4
Southend Trinity - 181-6
Brentwood won by 56 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

On a blazing hot day at the OCG Brentwood chose to bat after winning the toss.

Captain Shane Surujbally and Roger Mahadeo opened the batting on a flat batting wicket and put on a first wicket stand of 153 with Surajbally just missing his century (92) and Mahadeo continuing his run of good form with a fifty. Mark Donkin then came to the wicket and, not for the first time, scored very quickly finishing on 45 not out from 7 overs. The Victorians finished on 237-4.

Southend, interestingly, had called on the services of Brentwood's overseas player Danesh Kayani as they were a man short but Jof Fernhead picked up the prize wicket by bowling Kayani. Kayani then took to the field for the Victorians after the Victorians suffered another injury (Eaton) in this injury ravaged season. Good bowling from Keith Burgess (3 wickets), Fearnhead (2 wickets) and Robert O'Brien (1 wicket), together with 2 catches by keeper David Terrell helped to restrict Southend to 181-6 leaving the Victorians with a comfortable win by 56 runs.

20th June

Brentwood Victorians 273-4
South Weald 195-9
Victorians won by 78 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

Once again the Victorians were hampered by injuries but managed to put out a full team against South Weald.

Brentwood batted first and overseas player Danesh Kayani proved his quality with a splendid 131 (retired hurt) putting on 98 runs with Trevor Coote (42) for the 3rd wicket.

Then came Mick Pinkney who was only drafted into the side as a late replacement for the injured opener Dave Balroop. Although carrying an injury himself he bravely batted through the pain barrier to score a magnificent 50 not out. Kayani and Pinkney shared a partnership of 113 runs. The Victorians finished on 273-4 off their allotted 38 overs.

With an all spin attack, Brentwood bowled without any reward until the 15th over when makeshift bowler Coote clean bowled Stroud, the South Weald opener. After that wickets started to tumble with Ash Patel, 3 wickets, and Roger Mahadeo, 1 wicket. The pick of the bowlers, however, was Chris Eaton with 4 wickets including a stumping (Dave Terrell) and an early catch of the season candidate by Joff Fernhead spectacularly diving to his left at short mid-wicket. Skipper Shane Surujbally is to be congratulated for his superb marshalling of the Victorians depleted bowling resources.

4th July

Brentwood Victorians - 201-7
Chelmsford 191-8
Match Drawn

Report by Mick Pinkney

On a cloudy day captain Shane Surujbally won the toss and decided to bat.

Things started badly for the Vics when Surujbally lost his wicket early on in the innings. This brought Keith McIntyre who has been recovering from an injury to the crease and showed great determination to which it paid of with McIntyre making a well deserved (69). Replacement wicket keeper Alex Priddle came to the crease and made a superb 51 not out. He was helped along with hard hitting from Jof Fernhead (21) and Bob O'Brien (16 not out). The Victorians declared on 201 for 7.

The Victorians had a few injuries around tea time, but managed to get one replacement. Ash Patel opened the bowling with drafted-in player Paul Webb. They both kept the majority of the game tight and under control with Patel taking 2-59 and Webb 3-47, by far his best bowling performance this season.

The game started to open up for Chelmsford as they were going for the win. But secret weapon Dave Balroop came on and saved the game with figures of 1-6. Chelmsford ended the day on 191 for 8.

11th July

Great & Little Warley - 111 all out
Brentwood Victorians - 113-5
Victorians won by 5 wickets

Report by Mick Pinkney

The Victorians welcomed back Des Alford (broken finger) and Mark Donkin (Brentwood 5th XI) for their trip to Great & Little Warley on Sunday.

Stand-in Captain Ash Patel lost the toss and Brentwood were put in the field. Opening bowlers Mark Donkin and Mick Payne bowled well, swinging the ball and beating the bat regularly without success. Patel replaced Payne and, on his debut as Captain, led from the front, bowling with all the guile that this seasoned all rounder has accumulated in 25 years at Brentwood Cricket Club. Patel deservedly took 4 wickets. At the other end Donkin was finally rewarded with two wickets and Bob O'Brien also taking two wickets. Dave Terrell took a hat-trick of catches behind the stumps. Great & Little Warley were bowled out for 111.

In reply, Great & Little Warley took two early wickets leaving the Victorians struggling, but a partnership of 31 between Keith McIntyre and Alford steadied the ship. Further wickets were lost and at 69-5 the result was still in question. An unbeaten partnership of 44 from Mick Pinkney, 24, and Chris Eaton, 19, saw the Victorians home to a comfortable victory.

18th July

Brentwood Victorians - 183-8
Herongate - 254-7 declared
Match Drawn

Report by Mick Pinkney

Herongate won the toss and elected to bat. This seemed a good decision as they got off to a flyer. Fortunately for the home side the Victorians had a few old heads to steady the ship with Ash Patel taking 2 for 43, and Bob O'Brien 2 for 55. They were also helped by Deni Mistry (40-2). Herongate declared on 254-7.

The Vic's were feeling very confident in their run chase, but it all started badly by losing the top five for very few runs. The Vic's were staring at a defeat at this point, but the lower order did the Vic's proud with another brilliant innings form Alex Priddle (57 not out), ably assisted by O'Brien (22) and Patel (33) who starred with the bat as well as with the ball. The Vic's ended the day on 183-8.

25th July

Brookweald 164 all out
Brentwood Victorians 235-9
Victorians won by 71 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

Brookweald won the toss and invited the Victorians to bat on an overcast day. The two openers, Des Alford and Roger Mahadeo, constructed a solid opening partnership of 42. The Victorians total of 235 was achieved thanks to a brisk 48 from Danesh Kayani and 47 from Mark Donkin.

Brookweald found it difficult batting against the Victorians all spin attack. Ash Patel 2-16 and Keith Burgess 4-27 were the pick of the bowlers. Robinson threatened with an impressive unbeaten 93 but he lacked support and Brookweald were bowled out for 164.

1st August

Brentwood Victorians - 207 all out
Navestock - 186 all out
Brentwood Victorians won by 21 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

On a hot Sunday stand in captain Trever Coote won the toss and rightly decided to bat.

The Vic's had a good start with debutant Barry Brooks leading the way with a fine 66. Everyone chipped in, with Des Alford (20), Jof Fernhead (22), and Keith McIntyre (29). At the later part of the Vic's innings there was a mini collapse with good bowling from Navestock. The Vic's ended their innings on 207 all out.

The second half started well for Brentwood as another debutant, veteran Tony Prior (3 for 21) and reliable old warhorse Ash Patel (2 for 41) restricted the Navestock batsmen. But the lower order started to show some resistance, with I. Scott (77).

The game was favouring Navestock, but Bobby O'Brien was not going to let that happen with a tremendous spell of bowling being rewarded with figures of 1 for 19, and McIntyre returning 2 for 41. Finally Navestock were bowled out for 186 and the Victorians were victorious.

8th August

Billericay - 311-3 (40 overs)
Brentwood Victorians - 257 all out
Billericay won by 54 runs

Report by Mick Pinkney

On a sweaty day Trevor Coote, the Victorian's Captain won the toss and decided to field. The decision backfired as Billericay started like steam-engines and Hinds (109) and Will (101) took Billericay to a very good share of 311-3 off 40 overs.

In reply the Vics started brightly with Mahadeo (56) and McIntyre (55) keeping up with the run rate in the 1st 20 overs, and needing 8 an over with 8 wickets in hand the victory was looking promising. However, wickets began to fall and the Vics were bowled out for 257.

15th August

Brentwood Victorians - 203-9 declared
Rafhaels - 207-2
Rafhaels won by 8 wickets

Report by Mick Pinkney

The Victorians won the toss and decided to bat first. After an extremely slow start (82 in one and a half hours) the game soon started to change and with Roger Mahadeo, Dave Balroop and Mick Pinkney, the runs started to flow with Balroop particularly scoring a very quick 36, Mahadeo with a quicker 51 and Pinkney with a great looking 50. The Vic's finished with 203-9 declared.

Rafhaels started as slow as the Vic's but gradually increased the run rate and won the match in the last over with Astles 84 and Surry 73 the pick of their batsmen.

22nd August

Brentwood Presidents XI - 212-7
Brentwood Victorians - 216-4
Victorians won by 6 wickets (40 Over Match)

Report by Mick Pinkney

The President's XI batted first but got off to a bad start when vetaran Ken Hobbs was bowled with the first ball of the innings by Man of the Match Dave Balroop (2-28). Phil Howlett then came to the crease out of retirement and played a remarkable and clean hitting innings of 76 and well supported by Graeme Walker (47), Dave Childs (27) and Ash Patel (20). Once Ken Lingwood came to the crease he was haunted by Bob O'Brien who gets him every time they play, and surprise surprise O'Brien struck again. Neil Webb played well towards the end of the innings and the Presidents XI ending up with 212-7.

The Victorians started slowly and were behind the run rate with the first three wickets falling for 35 runs with fine bowling from Dave Barbone (1-17), Neil Webb (2-39), and Ron Bridge who was playing his first game for some 20 years.

Then came Trinidadian Dave Balroop. Balroop batted exceptionally but struggled against the prodigious turn of leg-spinner Paul Webb from whom he offered 4 chances, all of which went to ground on a luckless day for Webb. However Balroop rode his luck and showed the occasional touch of class of how West Indians should bat by scoring a brilliant 122 not out, turgidly supported by Alex Priddle (38) and Jof Fernhead (11 not out).

The game was won with some ease in the end with Balroop hitting 2 consecutive sixes, which brings his own seasons tally to over 600 runs so far.

5th September

Brentwood Victorians - 235-3
Wickford - 205-8
Match Drawn

Report by Mick Pinkney

The Victorians lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Dave Balroop and Shane Surujbally opened the batting. Surujbally had a shaky start after being out with a broken finger for 6 weeks and was finally dismissed for 13.

Balroop went on to score a stylish 63. Keith MacIntyre was joined by Roger Mahadeo at the crease. The run rate seemed to be slowing down, but in the later half it started picking up with some mighty blows from the pair. MacIntyre (89) and Mahadeo (58*) showed maturity in their innings with a final score of 235-3.

Wickford got their run chase off to a flyer with Fortt scoring 109* but the Vics managed to pin them back with some accurate bowling from Bob O'Brien (1-39) and Keith Burgess (3-64) turning the ball from the other end. Wicket-keeper Dave Terrell took two catches and a stumping. The game was in the balance and the Vics were running out of options. Mick Pinkney was called upon after not bowling for a couple of years. The game was finally in control with Pinkney's bowling performance of the year with figures of (3-18-4). Wickford ended on 205-8, game drawn.

12th September

Brentwood Victorians - 281-3 declared
Theydon Bois - 249-3
Match Drawn

Report by Mick Pinkney

The Victorians lost the toss and were asked to bat first, which, as it turned out, was not a bad thing as the Vic's got off to a flyer with Captain Shane Surujbally and Vice Captain Trevor Coote at the crease the runs started to flow.

With only his second game back after 6weeks Surujbally looked back to himself by scoring a very emotional century, smashing the ball at all parts of the field by hitting 19 4's and 2 6's. He showed a touch of class right through the innings. He was helped by Coote who played a solid innings and showed his immense talent and experience. Surujbally (107*) and Coote (50*) recorded the best opening partnership this year with 168 runs coming in just 23 overs. Both men retired after their splendid innings largely because of the effects of the Annual Awards Dinner the night before. Dave Balroop and Keith MacIntyre were the next batmen but Balroop didn't last long and was out for 2. Mark Donkin came in and smashed a quick fire 47. Macintyre played a steady innings with 32 not out. The Vics declared on 281 for 3 from only 36 overs.

In reply Theydon Bois started steadily with their opener making a century. But the Vics bowlers slowed the run rate down with Paul Webb troubling the batsmen who were trying to find an answer on how to play him. He was unfortunate to finish wicketless having consistently turned the ball passed the outside edge and had what looked like a good appeal for a stumping declined and a catch behind dropped. Reliable Ash Patel bowled his full repertoire and finished with 1-44. Bob O'Brien took a bit of stick but ended up with 2-88. Balroop capped a disappointing day by spilling a half-chance and getting carted everywhere when he came on to bowl.

It was a disappointing run chase by Theydon Bois who finished with 249 for 3 and could have been far more entertaining had they been more confident from the start of overhauling a particularly sporting declaration. They ended up just 33 runs short of their target having played far too defensively for much of the innings, credit presumably to the accuracy of the Vics bowlers.

The Vics had the edge over the game which finished with a winning draw.

26th September

Brentwood Victorians 159 all out
Bentley - 160-6
Bentley won by 4 wickets

Report by Shane Surujbally

On a very damp day Bentley took advantage by winning the toss and putting The Vic's in to bat. This was seeming to have backfired with Captain Shane Surujbally striking the ball with some clean hitting of (59). Once Surujbally was dismissed a collapse began. The only resistance came from M. Pinkney (17) and M. Donkin (28). The Vic's were finally dismissed for 159 all out.

Bentley had the better half with the pitch drying up making it easier to bat on. The Vic's made it difficult for Bentley with fine bowling from D. Balroop (1-28), A. Patel (2-23), M. Donkin (3-23). But The Vic's did not post a good enough total, which meant Bentley won easily by 4 wickets.

That was the last game of the season for the Vic's. It has been an up and down season with many injuries. But looking forward to next season, hopefully with fewer injuries.
