Scorecard

Brentwood Buccaneers managed to scrape through against the Orsett Cocks to claim a place in the Group Semi Finals of the Shepherd Neame Essex Twenty20 competition to set up a meeting with current holders Colchester Badgers.

With a cracking atmosphere, including live music from the decks of Shane Surujbally, in excess of 300 spectators and mascots Will Daly and James Warman would not be disappointed by what turned out to be a very close encounter, with both sides having opportunities to grasp the game. However, it was the strength in depth in Brentwood's spin department that eventually proved telling.

Brentwood's total was built around two top quality innings from Aaron West, who made 65 off 47 balls and Jahid Ahmed who made 54 from just 31 balls, with the two finding the boundary at regular intervals, and clearing it on four occasions between them.

However, crucially only one other batsman was able to make it into double figures, so a potential total of 200 was reduced to a competitive total of 166. The Cocks' Darren Polyblank and Shahid Khan picked up the best bowling figures; despite both being on during the fielding restrictions, neither went for more than 6 1/2 per over.

The Cocks' reply was built around an unbeaten 78 from Alex Karkoski, who brought up his fifty in just 36 deliveries. But the teenage spin pairing of Harri Jones and Sam Pountney brought Brentwood back into the game just as Orsett looked to be gaining control. Their combined figures of 8-0-51-3 meant that there was just too much to do from the other end.

The Colchester Badgers were the side who knocked out Brentwood in last season's Twenty20 competition, and also inflicted Brentwood's only defeat to date in the Shepherd Neame Essex Premier league season, so Brentwood will not only have to bring along their A-game, but also will feel they owe their opposition something. The date for the game is still to be confirmed, but will be announced on brentwoodcc.co.uk shortly.

Scorecard

The Brentwood Buccaneers knocked out the Colchester Badgers, the holders of the Shepherd Neame Twenty 20 competition title, to make the group finals, where they will meet Ardleigh Green.

A fine all round display from James Redwood and a spell of 3-26 from 4 overs from Ian Belchamber were the main architects of the Badgers' demise.

The Badgers' innings got off to a quick start, with Joe Austin in particularly belligerent form before he was the last of Belchamber's three dismisals. Belchamber was well supported by Redwood behind the stumps who claimed two stumpings.

At 97-4, the Badgers were in need of a partnership, and found one as Andrew Kennedy and Alex Young pushed the score along at a good rate, with Kennedy hitting three sixes in his 40 from just 27 deliveries. Their final total of 160 was stymied but some excellent fast bowling from Jahid Ahmed and Max Osborne who both finished with identical figures of 1-25 from four overs, and the Buccaneers would have been confident of chasing it down given the good nature of the pitch and short quick boundaries.

The reply from Brentwood was based around a 79 run partnership between Aaron West and Redwood from just fifty deliveries. When both fell in quick succession to former England U19 bowler Nick Gibbs, Brentwood needed to ensure they maintained the impetus, and cameos from Ahmed and Sam Pountney ensured this was the case. Even their wickets could not halt the Buccaneers as Osborne and Gulfraz Muwas scored eighteen runs in just eight balls to finish off the game.

The Buccaneers are just one win from Finals Day at Billericay and will be hoping for the a similar sort of atmosphere for their first away game in the competition at Premier League team Ardleigh Green.

Ardleigh Green Griffons - 92-8 (20 overs)

Scorecard

Brentwood Buccaneers proved that exciting Twenty20 cricket is not necessarily about hitting boundaries as they beat the Ardleigh Green Griffons in a pulsating, low scoring Shepherd Neame Essex Twenty20 Competition clash.

Upon inspection before the start, the wicket certainly did not seem to be one where a low score would prevail, but once the Buccaneers were reduced to 19-3 from five overs with two of the batsmen playing shots too early, it certainly did not seem as though Brentwood would amass anywhere near a large total.

It was left to Sam Pountney to rebuild the innings with his sole instruction to bat through the innings. This he did to great effect. Although he only crossed the boundary line on three occasions, he pushed back very few dots and picked up a single almost every ball.

Supported by cameos from Max Osborne and Gulfraz Muwas, Pountney almost carried out his captains' orders to the letter, being the eighth wicket to fall in the final over, unfortunately stumped off Fredi Butt's foot for what ended up being a match winning 37 from 41 balls.

His efforts allowed Brentwood to sneak up to 112 and at least give the Buccaneers' bowlers something to bowl at.

However, the Griffon's openers looked like they were going to make a mockery of the total. At 40-2 off just four overs it almost felt as though Brentwood needed another 50% more runs to even have made a game of it. Osborne had other ideas though as he picked up the three most crucial wickets in Butt, Roy Smith and Paul Hurworth, who had made 31 in just seventeen deliveries.

Brentwood were able to throw the game in their direction when Muwas produced an incredible spell of 2-10 in his four over spell, and alongside Andy Richardson, ensured the run rate was constantly increasing. Tom Moore was re-introduced to the attack, and after a first over that twice saw the ball go over his head for six, the seventeen year old showed great strength of character to come back and bowl his final three overs for just six runs, picking up his first wicket in the process.

In the end the Griffons could only score 12 runs from the final five overs, and the Buccaneers ran out surprisingly easy victors.

The Buccaneers are now through to the Finals Day, which will be held at Billericay on Sunday 16th August, where they will face either South Woodford or Upminster in the semi-final.

16th August

Brentwood Buccaneers' Twenty20 campaign ended on an unhappy note as they lost out in the semi-finals to South Woodford, leaving the Buccaneers large travelling support disappointed.

It was enormous disappointment for the team branded as favourites before finals day, but in the end South Woodford were deserved winners.

What possibly undid the Buccaneers was a misreading of the pitch. The apparent hard nature of the pitch meant Brentwood's side was based around the bowlers who get lots of bounce, but it was South Woodford's slower and lower bowlers who proved to be the hardest to get away.

The Buccaneers managed to restrict their opposition to 150 – a score Brentwood were more than happy with a the time. The pick of the Buccaneers bowlers were Max Osborne and Ian Belchamber who picked up 3-23 and 3-26 respectively from their four overs.

However, none of the Brentwood batsmen ever found life easy with Harry Shirt proving to be particularly unplayable as he picked up three wickets for just 18 runs. As the run rate continued to increase, so did the fall of wickets and well before Harri Jones was last man out in the seventeenth over, the game had gone.

Chingford ran out eventual winners, beating South Woodford in the final.
