23rd May

Billericay 5th XI - 247-5
Brentwood 6th XI - 250-3
Brentwood won by 7 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

Brentwood 6th XI made an impressive start to the league season with a convincing win at Brentwood School.

On a very good pitch, the visitors posted a formidable total, but some splendid batting from Brentwood's top order saw them coast to victory with ten overs to spare.

Billericay won the toss and elected to bat, but Liam Farge made good use of the new ball in a hostile opening spell which saw him dismiss both openers.

Farge had Smith caught behind by Ollie Walker and then had former Brentwood batsman Richard Carr well caught by Mike Karkaletsou at cover point.

Farge was well supported by Matthew Bell who bowled Sam Yates for a duck and Billericay were 40-3 after eleven overs.

However, Nigel Staplehurst was in great form for Billericay, punishing any short deliveries with some fine pull and cut shots.

Owen Mathias bowled a good spell of left arm spin and picked up the wicket of Joshua Barrett, but Staplehurst completed his century before Bell returned to the attack and bowled him with a fine delivery. Staplehurst made 113 and skipper Gary Mower finished on 47 not out as Billericay declared after 46 overs.

It was a big total to chase but all the Brentwood batsmen look full of confidence. Shreyas Moorti gave his team a good start with three consecutive fours in the second over, but in the next over he was bowled by Jamie Boom.

Gautam Datta joined Ollie Walker and they both began finding the boundary regularly as they compiled a stand of 109. Datta was run out for 64, an innings that included ten 4s, but Owen Mathias came in and soon looked in good form as well.

Walker hit nine 4s in his 53, and when he was bowled by Smith with the score on 172, Anand Patil joined Mathias. Patil played a sensible supporting role as Mathias scored freely at the other end, and Brentwood soon closed in on their target. Mathias found the boundary eleven times and finished on 63 not out while Patil made 17 not out.

30th May

Brentwood 6th XI - 188 all out
Orsett 4th XI - 141 all out
Brentwood won by 47 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

Brentwood 6th XI made it two wins out of two in the league as they overcame Orsett at Brentwood School to claim the maximum twenty points.

Batting first, after winning the toss, Brentwood lost Ravi Rupal and Paul Reilly to the bowling of Alan Roberts to leave them 16-2. But opener Joe Earley was in good form hitting a rapid 40 before also falling to Roberts when the score was on 47.

James Berry was joined by debutant Vamshi Lingala and he made an impressive start with three consecutive fours. Lingala made 31 in a partnership of 38 which was ended when Terry Pound bowled Lingala.

James Bowler and Prem Pithia made useful contributions of 15 and 17 respectively, but no one stayed with Berry long enough, and wickets fell rapidly to Pound and Smith as Brentwood found themselves on 141-9. But number 11 Ken Hobbs contributed 27 not out in a last wicket stand before young Berry was last man out for an excellent and very mature 39. Pound finished with 4-44 for the visitors.

188 looked a below par score on a very good track but Pithia and Mike Karkaletsou bowled good opening spells with Pithia picking up two wickets.

Matthew Bell and Berry both bowled tight spells and picked up a wicket apiece and, with the help of two run outs, Orsett were reduced to 83-6.

Charlie Moore led a recovery for the visitors but he was eventually bowled for 20 by Rupal and leg spinner James Bowler removed the last three Orsett batsmen to finish with 3-30.

6th June

Stanford-le-Hope 4th XI - 257-5 declared
Brentwood 6th XI - 116 all out
Stanford-le-Hope won by 141 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The 6th XI took a very young side to Stanford-le-Hope but, despite the defeat, there were some encouraging performances.

Brentwood asked Stanford to bat first on a pitch that looked as though it would help the bowlers after the previous day's rain, but opening bats Neil Docherty and Colin Knight looked comfortable until Anand Patil and Shreyas Moorti were introduced into the attack.

Docherty was bowled by Moorti for 23 and Patil had Knight caught behind by Ollie Walker for 20. Walker then took another good catch off Patil to dismiss Charlie Gleisinger and the home side were 54-3. Patil bowled a particularly good spell with figures of 7-2-29-2, but the Stanford-le-Hope batsmen capitalised on the inexperience of the Brentwood attack and Sam Sewell played a fine innings of 108. When Sewell was out, Bret Ingram (34 not out) and John Youngman (30 not out) maintained the tempo to enable an early declaration.

For Brentwood, young debutant Edward Abbott (1-30) bowled well, as did Matthew Bell (0-24).

Brentwood's reply was led by Moorti who hit eight fours in an innings of 40, playing some excellent shots to all parts of the ground.

It was too big a total for such an inexperienced side to chase, but the youngsters, Parth Patil, Bell, Abbott, George Jennings and Cameron Terry, all batted well and occupied the crease, making the home side work hard for their victory.

13th June

Brentwood 6th XI - 229 all out
Leigh-on-Sea 5th XI - 230-9
Leigh-on-Sea won by 1 wicket

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

After a very close and exciting finish, the 6th XI were narrowly beaten at St. Martins School by Leigh-on-Sea.

A century from Leigh captain Trevor Bull proved the most significant contribution on an afternoon when it had been difficult to predict a winner as the game swung one way and then the other.

Batting first, Brentwood got off to a flying start through openers Shreyas Moorti and Jon Hilliard. When Hilliard was out for 17, Jack Denman joined Moorti and Brentwood had 100 on the board after 12 overs before both fell in quick succession. Moorti's innings of 41 included nine 4s, while Denman hit five 4s and two 6s in his 33.

Some excellent bowling by Joshal Patel (4-33) and Paul Boughtwood (4-44) enabled the visitors to get back in the game as Brentwood's inexperienced middle order struggled to maintain the good start. They were 166-8 but a very sound innings of 35 not out by Anand Patil held the tail together. Patil got great support from No. 11 Liam Farge who made a quick 27 with four 4s and a 6, and they saw their side comfortably past 200 for maximum batting points.

Opening bowlers Farge and Matthew Bell bowled good spells but Leigh made a solid start through Bull and Patel before Patel was run out for 14 by some good fielding from Owen Mathias.

Patil bowled ten good overs and deserved more than just the one wicket. With plenty of time remaining Leigh were on top at 174-3, but the introduction of Edward Abbott into the attack saw the game swing back in favour of Brentwood. He bowled Ross Keeley and Ken McAvoy, and then a direct hit by Denman ran out Patrick Groves.

Bull and Boughtwood gave Leigh the initiative again until Hilliard returned for his second spell and had Boughtwood well caught at mid off by Patil for 17. Hilliard (3-24 from 9 overs) then picked up two more wickets, and Farge came back to finally remove Bull for 105.

It looked like Brentwood would now secure their third win of the season, but Leigh's last pair of Ben Seadon and Patrick Green had other ideas and with some sensible batting they put together a partnership of 24 to see their side home in a very tense finish.

20th June

Brentwood 6th XI - 106 all out
Old Southendians and Southchurch 4th XI - 110-2
Old Southendians and Southchurch won by 8 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The 6th XI suffered their third successive defeat as they went down by eight wickets to Old Southendians and Southchurch 4th XI at Shoeburyness Park.

The 6ths were affected by poor availability due to exams and school commitments and, batting first, only Chris Costin (30) and Ken Hobbs (38) made double figures as a largely inexperienced Brentwood batting line up was bowled out for just 106.

James Bunce (4-19), Ricky Stevenson (1-36), Matthew Austin (2-17) and Bob Fulford did the damage for the home side on a pitch that was never easy to bat on.

Martyn O'Connor and Andrew Hathaway made a cautious start to the Old Southendians innings against some tight bowling from Matt Bell and Dave Barbone.

Spinner Owen Mathias then came on and bowled a good spell of seven overs 1-22, picking up the wicket of Hathaway for 9 with a smart caught and bowled. Barbone (1-12 from nine overs) was also rewarded when he dismissed O'Connor for 21, wicket keeper Paul Reilly taking a good catch standing up.

But there were too few runs for Brentwood to defend, and Davies (18 not out) and Michael Bunce (30 not out), saw their team to a comfortable win.

Belhus 6th XI - 231-3 declared
Brentwood 6th XI - 2-0
Match Abandoned

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

A heavy thunderstorm just after tea caused brought an abrupt end to a Brentwood run chase and this game was abandoned as a draw.

Brentwood bowled well against a strong Belhus batting line up and restricted the visitors to 60 for 2 in the first 20 overs, Liam Farge (1-43) and Matthew Bell (1-16) taking the wickets. But, on a very hot afternoon, the Belhus batsmen gradually got on top with Jim Robertson making 104 not out.

There were just three balls bowled in the Brentwood innings, two of them wides, before the heavens opened.

4th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 216 all out
Chelmsford 5th XI - 218-4
Chelmsford won by 6 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The 6th XI were beaten by league leaders Chelmsford 5ths in a high scoring game at Chelmer Park.

Brentwood batted first on a good track and made a good start through Anand Patil and Jon Hilliard who both took advantage of a fast outfield to find the boundary regularly. Hilliard made 16 and Patil was run out for 49, and Brentwood found it difficult batting against a strong bowling attack. Prem Pithia (17), Jamie Dawes (25), Matt Thorpe-Apps (17) all made useful runs but, at 175-9, Brentwood looked to be heading for a below par score until No. 10 Mike Karkaletsou contributed a valuable 29 to get his team past 200 and maximum matting points.

Chelmsford was led by Jack Stevens who made an excellent 98 before being bowled by Prem Pithia (1-21) but Chelmsford eased their way to a six wicket win, despite some good bowling by Patil (1-26), Matt Thorpe-Apps (1-34) and Richard Horswill (1-10).

11th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 243 all out
Billericay 5th XI - 195-9
Match Drawn

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

A magnificent 145 not out by Anand Patil was the highlight of this match at Gardiners Way, Basildon, but Brentwood could not force a victory after Billericay's last pair survived the last 22 overs to hold out for a draw.

Billericay opted to field first and Brentwood got off to a good start through openers Patil and Jon Hilliard. Patil made batting look easy on a difficult pitch and soon began finding the boundary regularly. Hilliard also batted well in a stand of 73 for the first wicket, hitting four 4s in his innings of 23.

Jack Denman then contributed a quick 17 runs, but with an inexperienced batting line up to follow, it fell on Patil to hold together the rest of the innings. This he did superbly, hitting 26 fours and a six and he was still unbeaten when Brentwood were bowled out for 243 in the 43rd over.

For Billericay, Dave Cox took 3-85 and Bob Copsey 6-48.

Matthew Bell and Jon Hilliard bowled good opening spells when Billericay replied and Hilliard picked up two early wickets, and Brentwood were really on top when Anand Patil, not content with his contribution with the bat, came on and took 3-20.

Off spinner James Coleman was rewarded for a good spell with figures of 3-54, including the vital wicket of opener Mike Simnet for 65.

But Billericay's experienced last pair of Cox (36 not out) and Gary Mower (26 not out) batted sensibly and frustrated Brentwood who had to be content with their maximum 12 bonus points.

18th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 166 all out
Leigh-on-Sea 5th XI - 167-7
Leigh-on-Sea won by 3 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The first encounter between these two sides had resulted in a one wicket win for Leigh, and this was another close match that swung one way then the other, but once again Leigh emerged as narrow winners.

Brentwood were asked to bat first and the in form Anand Patil opened the batting with Jack Greenwood. They made a steady start, putting on 23 for the first wicket until Greenwood was caught off the bowling of left-armer Greg Bannister.

Two more wickets soon fell and Patil was then joined by Rishi Patel, one of three young players making their league debut for Brentwood. Patil and Patel put on 89 for the fourth wicket, Rishi hitting seven 4s in his innings of 38. Patil went on to make 75 but wickets continued to fall and Brentwood were all out for 166.

However, it looked as though this might be enough when the home side collapsed to 26-5 as Payal Patel, Anand Patil, Rishi Patel and James Coleman took early wickets.

But Leigh skipper Trevor Bull, who made 105 against Brentwood in the first meeting, hit 77 not out and with Liam Bull, 37, staged a recovery which saw Leigh eventually win by three wickets.

For Brentwood, there was some good bowling by Payal Patel (1-19), Anand Patil (1-26), James Coleman (2-29) and Rishi Patel (3-26).

25th July

Brentwood 6th XI - 44 all out
Old Southendians & Southchurch 4th XI - 45-4
Old Southendians & Southchurch won by 6 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

A mostly very young and inexperienced 6th XI batting line up was bowled out for just 44 against Old Southendians & Southchurch 4ths on Brentwood School's Heseltine pitch.

Brentwood were put in and struggled on an otherwise good pitch which favoured the seamers after a lot of recent rainfall. Only Anand Patil made double figures as wickets fell regularly to the bowling of Impey (2-12), James Bunce (5-21), Ricky Stevenson (1-6) and Ken Johnson (2-3). Julie Welham, with a defiant innings that lasted just over an hour, held up Old Southendians for a while but Brentwood were bowled out in 31.4 overs.

However, Brentwood then bowled very well and it took Old Southendians 16 overs to complete a six wicket win. Paul Trew (1-19), Connor Whetstone (1-9) and Edward Abbott (1-8) took wickets.

1st August

Brentwood 6th XI - 201-9
Orsett 4th XI - 97-0
Match Abandoned

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The forecast rain finally set in at about 5.40 to end a promising Orsett run chase and deprive Brentwood of two of their batting points.

Brentwood had been put in to bat and after Anand Patil had given them another good start with an innings of 31, they began to lose wickets and were 86-5 after 27 overs.

But Jon Hilliard and Matt Thorpe-Apps put together a fine stand of 75, with Hilliard making 46 and Thorpe-Apps 59, and Brentwood were able to scramble past 200 in the 52nd over to claim maximum batting points.

Bradley Boreham (3-27) and George Gibbon (3-66) were Orsett's most successful bowlers.

Orsett openers Peter Ridgwell (48 not out) and Ben Smith (39 not out) looked in top form despite the best efforts of Brentwood's bowlers.

But play was halted after 18 overs and as less than 25 overs had been bowled in the 2nd innings, both sides had to settle for the 6 points for an abandoned game.

8th August

Brentwood 6th XI - 187-9
Stanford-le-Hope 4th XI - 128 all out
Brentwood won by 59 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

The 6th XI recorded their first win since May when they beat Stanford-le-Hope by 59 runs at Brentwood School.

Brentwood won the toss and elected to bat on a slow, green pitch, and made a steady start through openers Anand Patil and Jon Hilliard who put on 89 for the first wicket, before Hilliard was first out for 21. Patil was again in good form but was dismissed soon after for 56, bringing his league total to 427 runs for the season.

Brentwood then found it harder to score with the introduction of Colin Knight (1-47) and Adrian Page (4-28) into the attack. Boundaries were hard to come by but James Berry played a solid innings until he was bowled by Knight for 16. Mike Karkaletsou made a valuable 38 runs and Joe Daborn hit a quick 13 as Brentwood closed their innings on 187-9 after 52 overs.

Ravi Rupal (1-20) made an early breakthrough having Colin Knight well caught at mid on by James Berry. Andrew Thorpe-Apps (1-14) bowled a good opening spell and Karkaletsou (1-17) produced an excellent delivery to claim the valuable wicket of Sam Sewell for 27.

Brentwood then brought on young leg spinner Parth Patil (2-41) and he took two wickets in his first over to put his team in control.

Skipper Page threatened to keep Stanford-le-Hope in the game with some big hits to the boundary but it was the introduction of Jon Hilliard that was to prove decisive. He took the last five wickets in 4.4 overs for just 8 runs. The batsmen had no answer to Hilliard's inswing and the end came very quickly, Dave Berry taking a catch in the 31st over to leave Stanford-le-Hope 128 all out, with Page unbeaten on 41.

15th August

Brentwood 6th XI - 196 all out
Belhus 4th XI - 199-6
Belhus won by 4 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Scorecard

Brentwood batted first on a fast track at Ockendon Rec. and lost Henry Nation in the 4th over to the bowling of Taz Ali.

Paul Reilly looked in good form, hitting Ali for a six and two fours in one over, while opener Dave Berry punished any loose balls finding the boundary on a number of occasions taking advantage of a very fast outfield.

Reilly made 15 and Brentwood were on 84-4 when Ravi Rupal joined Dave Berry. These two put on a valuable stand of 91. After Berry was caught just one short of his century, no one could stay with Rupal and he was left unbeaten on 44 as Brentwood were all out for 196.

It was a total that looked slightly below par with the fast outfield and some of Brentwood's bowlers did not help themselves with some wayward deliveries early in their spells. However, Andrew Thorpe-Apps (1-66) was very unlucky not to pick up more wickets as he repeatedly found the edge of the bat. Rupal took a good catch in the gulley off Mike Karkaletsou's bowling but the Belhus no. 4, Sarwar, looked in good form and began to score freely.

When James Berry came into the attack he quickly put Brentwood back in the game by taking three wickets in his first two overs.

Simon Wood eventually dismissed Sarwar for 69, well caught on the mid wicket boundary by Rupal, but Belhus were still able to secure a comfortable victory with overs to spare.
