22nd May

Harold Wood 4th XI - 94-7
Brentwood 5th XI - 93 all out
Harold Wood won by 3 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Despite a valiant effort in the field, a very young Brentwood 5th XI were finally beaten by an experienced Harold Wood side due to their shortage of runs.

Batting first after being put in, Brentwood lost wickets steadily with only Paul Haynes (13) Chris Dann (18) and skipper Steve Manterfield (24) reaching double figures.

Good bowling by Dave Barbone (2 for 33), Deni Mistry (2 for 18), Carl Manterfield (2 for 24) and Chris Boon (1 for 6) backed up by some keen fielding made Harold Wood struggle to reach their meagre target, which they eventually did for the loss of seven wickets.

29th May

Brentwood 5th XI - 227 for 5 declared
Loughton 4th XI - 77 all out
Brentwood won by 150 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Following last week's disappointing defeat at Harold Wood, Brentwood got into their stride against 10 man Loughton.

After losing the toss and being put in, Brentwood got off to a terrific start with Rhys Furlong (38) and Chris Dann (33) putting on 80 for the second wicket in only 10 overs. The momentum was maintained by Matt Lloyd (31), Steve Manterfield (39 n.o) and Dev Gulrajarni (19 n.o), so Brentwood were able to declare on 227 for 5 after only 44 overs.

Backed up by some excellent fielding, bowlers Dave Barbone (3 for 34) Andrew Thorpe-Apps (1 for 25) and Carl Manterfield (4 for 17) worked their way steadily through the Loughton batting order, finally dismissing them for 77 in 22.4 overs.

5th June

Brentwood 5th XI - 250-4 declared
Chingford 4th XI - 135 all out
Brentwood won by 115 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

A magnificent innings of 110 by Tony Dann on his 50th birthday set Brentwood up for their second successive victory. Opening with son Chris (39) the Danns put on 113 runs for the first wicket, and Tony continued to dominate the innings until his dismissal with the score on 229. Brentwood declared on 250 and despite a stubborn opening partnership from Campbell (56) and Coulson (37) began to make inroads into the Chingford batting.

Off spinners 12 year old Harry Jones (3 for 24) and 14 year old Dev Gulrajani (1 for 24) bowled superbly to make the initial breakthrough, then the final five wickets fell in eleven balls for no runs to Steve Manterfield (4 for 24) and Tony Jones (2 for 2).

12th June

Brentwood 5th XI - 228 all out
Hornchurch 5th XI - 231 for 6
Hornchurch won by 4 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

After electing to bat first, Brentwood were teetering on the brink at 118 for 8 when 16 year old Mark Palmer joined Steve Manterfield at the crease. Mark then scored his maiden 50 in a stand of 108 to give Brentwood a total that looked well out of reach 30 overs earlier.

However, despite a superb spell of bowling from Carl Manterfield (4 for 40 from 12 overs), Brentwood's fielding crumbled under an onslaught from Hornchurch batsmen Persand (106) and Syms (74 not out) who reached their target with 10 balls to spare.

19th June

Ilford 4th XI - 109 all out
Brentwood 5th XI - 110 for 4
Brentwood won by 6 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

A stunning bowling performance from Rob Coote (5 for 27 from 16 overs) and Carl Manterfield 3 for 23 from 9 overs) broke the back of the Ilford batting on a tricky wicket at Hainault Rec. on Saturday.

Backed up by some good fielding and a wicket each for Paul Haynes and Mark Palmer the stubborn Ilford tail soon followed suit as they collapsed to 109 all out.

Agressive batting from Chris Dann (37), Chris Eaton (28 n.o) and Arun Gamesan (20 n.o) meant that Brentwood reached their target in only 18.4 overs to ensure a straightforward victory.

26th June

Brentwood 5th XI - 172-1
Wanstead 5th XI - 171 all out
Brentwood won by 9 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood inflicted top of the table Wanstead's first defeat of the season with a crushing 9 wicket victory at the Drive on Saturday.

Only opener Southcott (100) was able to withstand the seam bowling of Dave Barbone (5 for 60) and 15 year old leg spinner Chris Boon (3 for 33) very long as Wanstead were bowled out for 171.

Brentwood openers Tony Dann (60) and Boon (56 n.o) put on 92 runs before Dann lost his wicket. Boon was then joined by 16 year old Rhys Furlong who scored an aggressive 40 not out as the youngsters steered their side to an easy victory.

3rd July

Harlow 4th XI - 115 all out
Brentwood 5th XI - 117-2
Brentwood won by 8 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood continued to climb the league with their third successive victory on Saturday.

With one eye on the weather, Brentwood inserted their opponents in an attempt to finish the game before the heavens opened. Despite dropping several catches the plan worked perfectly as Mike Hornsby (4 for 57), Ian Smith (3 for 20), Owen Myers (2 for 18) and Ewan McCallum (1 for 5) destroyed the Harlow batting.

Chris Boon (60no), well supported by Matt Lloyd (22) and McCallum (25 not out) completed the run chase in only 20 overs, hitting a six to win the match in the pouring rain.

10th July

Harold Wood 4th XI - 190-5
Brentwood 5th XI - 123-9
Match Drawn

Report by Ken Hobbs

A strong Harold Wood side put on 190 for 5 despite a superb bowling performance from Dave Barbone (1 for 37 from 19 overs), backed up by Rob Coote (2 for 68), Haran Sivapalan (1 for 12), and Deni Mistry (1 for 25). Harold Wood were aided by a number of dropped catches at vital times in their innings.

In reply, Brentwood batted poorly against a good attack with only Coote (21), Sivapalan (28) and Steve Manterfield (28 not out) emerging with any credit.

Rain forced the game to end 3 overs early with Manterfield and Barbone clinging on for the draw.

17th July

Loughton 4th XI - 53 all out
Brentwood 5th XI - 56-1
Brentwood won by 9 wickets

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood crushed Loughton after being asked to field first at Bancroft School on Saturday.

The Loughton batsmen never came to terms with superb bowling by Dave Barbone (3 for 10), Carl Manterfield (2 for 6), Jamie Battu (2 for 22) and Ewan McCallum (2 for 7), backed up by some good work in the field as they took 30.5 overs to amass their paltry total.

In comparison, with opener Chris Dann (34 not out) in fine form, Brentwood took a mere 9.2 overs to reach their target.

24th July

Chingford 4th XI - 162-7
Brentwood 5th XI - 105 all out
Chingford won by 57 runs

Report by Ken Hobbs

Brentwood suffered a disappointing defeat at lowly an abysmal batting performance.

Having elected to bat first, Chingford were made to work hard for their runs against a tight Brentwood attack. Mike Hornsby (3 for 54 from 18 overs) bowled particularly well, supported by Rob Coote (2 for 40), Paul Haynes (1 for 12) and Mark Palmer (1 for 9).

Against a moderate Chingford attack the Brentwood batsmen all contrived to get themselves out with a series of awful shots in a totally inept batting display.

31st July

Hornchurch 5th XI - 231-6 declared
Brentwood 5th XI - 105 all out
Hornchurch won by 126 runs

Report by Steve Manterfield

Another dismal batting performance from Brentwood resulted in a heavy defeat for the second week running.

Despite strong bowling performances from Mickey Payne (3 for 71) and Dave Barbone (2 for 28), Hornchurch amassed a healthy total after electing to bat first.

The Brentwood batsmen showed considerably more determination than they had the previous week against Chingford, but were still bowled out with 6 overs remaining.

7th August

Ilford 4th XI - 281-6 declared
Brentwood 5th XI - 131-5
Match Drawn

Report by Steve Manterfield

Brentwood ground out a draw after Ilford batted on for far too long before declaring on Saturday.

All four Brentwood bowlers stuck well to their tasks on a hot afternoon but had little luck against hard hitting batsmen on a flat track. Deni Mistry (2 for 66) and Rob Coote (2 for 75) emerged with the best figures.

With the Ilford declaration coming so late and such a huge total to chase Brentwood had little option but to play for the draw which they achieved comfortably with Steve Manterfield top scoring on 43 not out.

14th August

Wanstead 5th XI - 258-3
Brentwood 5th XI - 256-9 declared
Wanstead won by 7 wickets

Report by Steve Manterfield

In a high scoring affair, Wanstead ended up winning the game comfortably thanks to centurion D. Southcott.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Brentwood were scoring at a consistently quick pace, thanks to opener, and Brentwood's top scorer, Tony Dann (83) and later in the innings Chris Eaton (48), with a couple of other batsmen chipping in, and eventually declaring on 256-9.

However after some good batting, and some indifferent bowling and fielding, Wanstead won the game easily, finishing on 258-3, with batsmen D. Southcott making 113, and N. Baldwin 60 not out.
