Report by Mickey Payne

On a chilly morning Brentwood won the toss and elected to bat. Abbot soon found his timing and played some lovely shots, abley assisted by Warman. Jennings and Lovelock carried on the same way and then Doyle and Murphy came to the crease scampering a lot of singles.

Daly kept up a good rate of scoring, helped out by his partner Cohen. Payne hit a few boundaries in the final overs with Walker keeping his wicket very safe at the other end.

Brentwood ended up with a good score of 283.

All the Brentwood bowlers did well, not giving away that many extras. Abbot kept his field organized and 5 wickets were taken with the Essex Girls ending up with a score of 228.

E Abbot 17 not out
J Payne 11 not out
A Doyle 9 not out

G Jennings 2 overs 2 wickets for 4
J Payne 2 overs 1 wicket for 2
R Lovelock 2 overs 1 wicket for 8
A Doyle 2 overs 1 wicket for 10

Springfield 249
Brentwood 239

On a sunny day with the pitch flat Springfield went in first. Brentwood had quite a few first timers in their team, but all the boys bowled and fielded to a high standard.

Not that many extras were given away with J.Miall doing well behind the stumps. J.Weale, O.Robbins and M.Preece Cogswell took a wicket each. Springfield ended up with a good score of 249.

Brentwood started off their innings solidly, but missed a lot of singles due to inexperience. This will improve in time.

With four overs to go Brentwood needed over 30 runs to win but with their two most experienced players J.Payne and L.Brailey batting they had chances.

It was very close but with good bowling from Springfield too many wickets were lost. Highest three scorers were J.Payne 13, J.Miall 8 and J.Weale 4. Brentwood were 10 runs short.

Many thanks to the Weale family for taking their turn at organising the boys teas.

Bentley 255
Brentwood 257
Brentwood won by 2 runs (Terrier format)
U11A League match

On a very hot day Brentwood managed to play their first complete League match, after their first one was rained off. Skipper Edward Abbott won the toss and chose to bowl. Bentley were batting well but Edward struck in the 3rd over and took 2 wickets. Ryan Beecheno and George Gennings followed and took wickets in the 6th and 8th over. The pair continued the flow and took wickets in the 15th and last over and Bentley ended with a score of 255 for 7, having lost a further wicket to a run out.

Brentwood opening pair Abbott and Lewis Cowling began steadily and in the next pair increased the rate - James Berry getting 2 massive fours. George Gennings showed his strength and power and Aaron Doyle continued with another two good 4's. This took us ahead but in Terriers format anything can happen and any loss of wicket can hand the win to the opposition. Matthew Bell, in the last pair, batted very maturely ensuring the win was ours.

Brentwood U11C 310-5
Hutton U11C 190 all out
Brentwood won by 120 runs
U11C League Match

With a large crowd, blue skies and a good pitch an inexperienced Hutton team won the toss and put Brentwood into bat. From the start Brentwood were clinical in their calling and running between the wickets. Lots of good shots were played even though the boys were itching to play some 20/20 slogs. Runs were added continuously all the way through the innings and Brentwood ended up with a healthy score of 310/5

Brentwood U11C vs Hutton

Brentwood U11C vs Hutton

After tea Brentwood got into a rhythm of bowling good line and length and looked sharp in the field. All the players encouraged and backed up each other. Wickets fell in the shape of run outs and straight bowling.

Hutton ended up with a score of 190/10

It was a convincing win for Brentwood U9 who also play as Brentwood U11C. It shows that all their hard work pays dividends when they come up against boys of their own age.

Hutton U11B 69 all out
Brentwood U11B 56 all out
Hutton won by 13 runs

Brentwood's much improved bowling and fielding effort was not quite enough to bring them their first league victory of the season at the OCG.

Cameron Terry and Max Beckett immediately put Hutton under pressure, the former picking up 2 early wickets. Accurate bowling from the entire Brentwood side, backed up by keen fielding and catching, maintained pressure on the visitors batting and spinners George Wingrove and Parth Patil shared 5 wickets as Hutton succumbed for 69.

With an eminently gettable target before them, Brentwood began positively with Patil quickly moving into the teens before he became the first of 4 lbw decisions; something of a rarity at this level of colts cricket. With Hutton's strongest bowlers being used throughout, a procession of Brentwood batsmen came and went to loose strokes but Terry steadied the ship with 14 which began to turn the game back towards Brentwood, before he too was adjudged leg before. The home side quickly succumbed after this to finish 13 runs adrift in a game they could and should have won.

Brentwood U11B 74-9
Shenfield U11B 75-3
Shenfield won by 7 wickets

A 7 wicket defeat belied a further improvement from Brentwood as they faced their unbeaten local rivals at Weald Park on Sunday.

Inserted on a damp pitch, opener Brown was well held early on as the Shenfield bowlers used the heavy conditions to swing and seam the ball prodigiously. Against this, Hicks and Beckett displayed excellent application and promising technique to take the score past 40 before they were out for 17 and 19 respectively. The front line Shenfield bowlers now turned the screw and the Brentwood middle order were unable to cope with a mature mix of pace and spin which, despite a brief flourish from Gibb, reduced them to 50 for 8. However, showing good defensive technique, Short and Hale battled in support of 10 year old debutant Moore who counter-attacked impressively with 3 stylish boundaries in his 14 not out which lifted the visitors to a respectable 74 for 9.

When skipper Terry and fellow opener Ragbir both grabbed early wickets, the Brentwood total began to look competitive and when Hale also produced an accurate spell to leave Shenfield 15 for 3, an upset looked possible. However, as Brentwood rotated their attack, the less experienced bowlers were unable to maintain quite the same pressure despite another good all round fielding performance. Miles and Lewis were thus able to guide Shenfield home with several overs to spare, the former finishing on 25 not out.

Despite the eventual margin of defeat, Brentwood can take positives from having caused Shenfield some concern by being in control during several passages of play, and from a much improved batting performance against a strong bowling attack.

Springfield U11A - 83 all out (18.1 overs)
Brentwood U11A - 84-6 (17.2 overs)
Brentwood won by 4 wickets
CEDCB Cup match

A very keen Brentwood team turned up at Springfield for their first Cup match, they were quite nervous as some had never played normal cricket before. Captain Edward Abbott won the toss and chose to bowl. He was missing his two Essex players James Berry and Matthew Bell, so he opened with himself and Essex U10 player Joshua Turner, who was playing his first match. Joshua took wickets in his 2nd and 3rd over's, Springfield were now on 25 runs after 6 over's. The bowling was steady and fielding was superb, until Ryan Beecheno came onto bowl destroying Springfield's batting by taking 4 wickets and 1 run out in 3 over's. George Gennings finished their innings, taking the last wicket in the 19th over.

It was a difficult decision who should open the batting as my openers were missing, so Aaron Doyle and Ryan Beecheno offered, unfortunately we lost Aaron on the 2nd ball, Ryan went onto score 13 runs before we lost him in the 4th over. Joshua Turner and George Gennings batted next, but by the 7th over we had lost them and the score was only 33. Edward Abbott came in with Cameron Maxwell, when we lost Cameron in the next over, Lewis Cowling took to the crease with Edward and between them put on 40 runs before we lost Lewis and then Ben Stacey hit the winning runs in the 18th over. Congratulations to Edward Abbott for his thoughtful and careful batting and to Ryan Beecheno for his 4 wickets. We are due to play the winners of the Chelmsford/Writtle match in the next round within the next few weeks.

Brentwood U11B - 95-6
Billericay U11B - 78-3
Brentwood won

Brentwood U13B's scored a deserved first win of the season against Billericay at the OCG on Sunday.

The visitors won the toss and inserted Brentwood on a damp pitch that would make scoring difficult throughout the match. However, continuing his recent good form, Short looked secure against the new ball as his partner Wood carried the attack to the visitors. They would take the score into the 20's before each perished looking to push the score along. Top scorer, Terry continued the positive approach and the runs continued to flow as skipper Beckett helped him push the score to 60 for 3 at the half way mark. However Billericay plugged away and their pressure told as Terry, Beckett and Hayward were out in quick succession trying to force the pace. In the early season this may have signalled a total collapse, however Chris Moore and Callen, now combined firm defence with intelligent running to take the score to a healthy 95 at the end of the 20 overs.

Brentwood now attempted to put the visitors on the defensive and good opening spells from Ragbir and Haywood did just that as Billericay struggled to raise their run rate above 3 an over. Ragbir was rewarded with the first wicket while tight bowling from Callen, Humphrey and Jonathan Moore maintained the pressure. Leg-spinner Gibb got Brentwood's second wicket and the visitors entered the second half of their innings with a required strike rate now above 6 an over. Although opener Howard would carry his bat, he and his partners were rarely able to find the boundary and with the home teams keen fielding restricting the singles, Terry and Haywood were able to bowl out the Brentwood overs with increasing confidence until Billericay required an unlikely 23 from the final 6 balls despite having wickets in hand.

While this is only their first win, the whole Brentwood U13B squad can be justifiably proud of the work they have put in to achieve a string of improving performances in recent weeks and team spirit is high for the remainder of the season.

Chelmsford U11 - 274-7
Brentwood U11 - 322-6
Brentwood won by 48 runs
League match (Terriers' format)

The team arrived at Brentwood very keen with 2 new players Rishi and sister Payal. George Gennings captained the team as usual captain Edward is missing. George won the toss and elected to bowl. Chelmsford's batting was very steady with Joshua Turner and Payal Patel opening the bowling. When Rishi Patel came on in the 2nd change, he destroyed Chelmsford by taking 3 wickets. Brentwood's fielding was 1st class and when youngsters Jonathan Moore and Luke Brailey came on they took another 3 wickets between them.

Brentwood U11C vs Hutton

Back: Joshua Turner, Aaron Doyle, Payal Patel
George Gennings, Rishi Patel, Jonathan Moore

Front: Joe Hunt, Ewan Smith, Lewis Cowling, Luke Brailey

After an excellent tea, Brentwood opened their batting with Payal and Luke, Payal hitting 2 well deserved 4's. Aaron and Lewis came in next and Aaron also hit two 4's. When George and Joe came on, George was in excellent form and hit five 4's and Joe 2. There was then excellent batting from Ewan and Joshua who continued hitting 4's, three each. Think the team were out to hit only fours today. Rishi and Jonathan were the last pair and form continued when Rishi hit three 4's and two massive 6's, one going over the top of the containers. Well done to you all, a well deserved win, Brentwood could be heading to the top of the League.

Brentwood answered their innings by quick runs, Rishi Patel put on a magnificent 30 runs before being retired, winning the game with several overs to go.

League match (Terriers' format)

Team: Edward Abbott, Josh Turner, Tom Wingrove, Aaron Doyle, Jack Payne, George Gennings, Lewis Cowling, Harry Cowling, Joe Hunt, Ewan Smith.

On a very cold windy day Brentwood win the toss and decide to bat. Lewis Cowling and Tom Wingrove open the batting; they get us off to a good start, scoring 10 runs each. The score ticks over and when George and Aaron come in, its now 261, they score 12 and 13, followed by Edward and Jack Payne scoring 11 and 12, finishing on 309, quite a respectful score considering we have a very young team today.

Our bowling was top class taking 10 wickets between the team, leaving Billericay on 220 at the finish.

Midweek Mini T20 8 a side Tournament 12th August 2009 at London Playing Fields Fairlop

A very well organised tournament, Brentwood colts were excited playing teams from the Metropolitan area such as Ilford, Fives, Wanstead, Buckhurst Hill and Old Parkonians. Our 1st match was against Buckhurst Hill, which we beat them convincingly. We then played Ilford which was an exciting match, but Brentwoods bowling took Ilford apart. Unfortunately we lost to Upminster in the finals, to a very close match.

Brentwood U11A - 373-3
Springfield U11A - 241-8
Brentwood won

Team: E Abbott, R Patel, J Berry , P Patel, J Turner, T Wingrove, J Whetstone, E Smith, R Beecheno, M Bell.

A strong Brentwood side took to the field knowing another win would cement their place at the top of the league. After electing to bat, Rishi Patel scored a quick fire 34 to set up the innings beautifully. Some wayward bowling from an inexperienced opposition allowed us to score quickly and a fine cameo last wicket pairing of Ed Abbott ( 14) and Matthew Bell (42), added 63 in 4 over's, to set a formidable target of 373.

Springfield started well in reply but the run rate was proving difficult! Economical bowling from Payal Patel, Julian Whetstone and Tom Wingrove (all of which took wickets) during the middle part of the innings effectively sealed the win, which enabled Ryan Beecheno to finish of with 2-6 from his two overs.

Shenfield U11A - 302-3
Brentwood U11A - 296-6
Shenfield won

And so to the final match of the league season, looking to secure a 100% record !

Shenfield won the toss and decided to bat. A steady if unspectacular start from both sides resulted in Shenfield amassing 246-1 from the opening 10 overs, but some big hitting soon followed which enabled Shenfield to finally score 302-3 from their allocated 20 overs. The pick of the bowling came from J Berry 0-7 from 2 overs, T Wingrove 0-4 from his 2 and J Turner 1-11 again from 2.

Therefore 303 required to win the league! Rishi and Ewan off to a flyer 237-0 after 4 overs and we progressed steadily albeit in gathering gloom.

To their credit Shenfield's bowlers stuck to their task and pegged us back with regular wickets taken in the later stages, chipping away at our total and it came down to a nail biting finish in the darkness, with Brentwood needing 12 runs to win from the final 8 balls.

A tremendous final over from Shenfields opening bowler ensured we were unable to create the necessary strokes to push us onto victory and we fell agonisingly 6 runs short!

Brentwood U11A - 66-6 (20 overs)
Chelmsford U11A - 67-1 (16 overs)
Chelmsford won

After a very distressing time trying to organise this match, as teams had played their previous rounds late, which put us in a position that Chelmsford did not want to play at various times due to holidays and players missing, even though we offered them a total of 6 dates, we finally agreed on a date probably not best suited to us.

We won the toss and elected to bat, this may have been the wrong decision, as we were used to chasing, but we were thinking of the light.

Unfortunately we lost our 2 opening batsmen for no runs and things continued badly until Edward and Matthew came in, they kept the team together for a while scoring 16 and 22 but Matthew was run out and Edward was bowled, thus ending our innings on only 66 runs.

We knew then we would have to bowl extremely well, things went our way immediately when Matthew caught and bowled their star player Clifford, in the second over but Chelmsford had 2 more experienced players who saw the game to the end scoring 29 and 21 , thus winning with 4 over’s to go.
