Essex CCC at the Old County Ground
Brentwood was the original county ground in the days before Essex CCC was
first-class. Forty-six years after the 1876 formation of the Club, the inaugural
first-class match was between Essex and Dublin University in July 1922. The
match was drawn but C J H Tregdown made his highest score for Essex (77)
and J G Dixon (7-61) also produced the best return of his career, in his
final season with the County. It was only when Essex moved away from Leyton
that first-class cricket returned to Brentwood in 1934. The list of records
up to the last match with Worcestershire in May 1969 are worth recording.

There are many other standards that still remain. These include records for
any cricket ground, first-class records for and against Essex plus much more
at a venue that Trevor Bailey described as, "Like a Barbie Doll, pretty, but
so petite that when batting from the pavilion end a straight six was not
more than a chip with a nine iron. Strangely, this short boundary proved
to be a wicket-taker, because so many batsmen simply could not resist the
temptation and holed out."
