2003 End of Season Report
Brentwood Cricket Club's sensational season was capped off in fine style on Saturday 13th September with the presentation of the Annual Awards at the Club's traditional end of season Dinner and Dance. "The Event in the Tent" (so called as it is staged in a plush marquee attached to the pavilion at the Club's Shenfield Road headquarters) was attended by 120 club members and guests celebrating what has been universally described as the best season in the Club's 122 year history. This has seen both 1st and 2nd teams being promoted and the 4th team winning their league.
This means the Club are now within sight of achieving their ultimate aim, that of having all 4 teams in their respective Premier Leagues. Whilst it was generally acknowledged that the Club's success in 2003 had been a result of all-round team contributions and club spirit, certain individuals were singled out for special mention.
The Roll of Honour reads as follows:
- 1st team Player of the Year - Paul Sutherland (64 wickets at an average of 9, a club record)
- 2nd team Player of the Year - James Reilly (exemplary year behind the stumps, worthy of any 1st team)
- 3rd team Player of the Year - Tony Prior (shining example of the club's successful youth policy)
- 4th team Player of the Year - Ewan McCallum (21 wickets @ an average of 11)
- 5th team Player of the Year - Simon Manterfield
- 6th team Player of the Year - Vinae Gulrajani
- Clubman of the Year - Paul Webb (Social and Marketing Chairman, raised £8500 for club funds in one season, thankless task of arranging social events and attracting sponsorship to the club, press liaison officer)
- President's Award - Ken Lingwood (Club Chairman, for leading the club to its most successful year in club's history)
- Chairman's Award - Richard Whitehall (1st team captain, for leading the 1st team to promotion in his 1st season as captain, despite losing 4 top order batsmen just before the season started and resisting pressure from the committee to buy in replacement players to strengthen the squad)
- "The Riley Wallop" - new award dedicated to the memory of former Club Chairman Charles Riley and awarded every year to the person scoring the fastest 50, for 2003 Mark Donkin, 53 off 28 balls in the 3rd team vs. Wanstead.
