The Brentwood Colts Presentation Evening September 2006

Such has been the enthusiasm and support for colt's cricket at Brentwood Cricket Club this year that the Committee decided to invest in a hired marquee to stage this years Colts Awards Evening. The money proved to be well spent as approximately 150 colts and parents enjoyed what was a very successful evening.

Team managers reviewed the season and Player-of-the-Year awards were made to Sam Dawes (U11), Jack Greenwood (U13), Ed Allen (U15) and James Boon (U16). The winner of the Special Achievement Award was Aaron West, a 15 years old batsman who scored heavily in Colt's cricket throughout the season and was a key member of the men's 2nd X1. Through weight of achievement in that side he earned promotion to the men's 1st X1 on a number of occasions. Also he was selected to be 12th man for the Essex CC 1st eleven in a recent home match at the Chelmsford County Ground a magnificent achievement for of one so young. Another 15 year old, Tim Barbone, also played for the men's 1st X1 during the season. To have two such young gifted players playing in top class premier league and county cricket is very good news for Brentwood Cricket Club

In talks given by the coaches and managers special mention was made of how much progress has been made by boys throughout the club and how they have been so keen to learn and work hard at their game. This is not only a credit to the boys but also to the team of excellent coaches and helpers that Colts Chairman, David Barbone, has assembled. Credit should also be given to the Colts parents who encouraged and supported their children throughout the season.

David Barbone could not hide his delight at what has been achieved this year but he emphasised that the success must be sustained and to do this the Colts must continue to find willing volunteers from within the ranks of the men's club and parents. This year the Colts section say a temporary farewell to Under 11 manager Phil Crook who is off to university and over the past 2 years has overseen the tremendous success of that side. Was it only 7 years ago that Phil himself was a member of the Under 11 side?

The most successful Colts side this season was the under 15's who won the Central Essex league and were runners up in the cup. The team were very lucky to have such an enthusiastic and dedicated manager in Peter Lowman and the boys acknowledged his efforts in a short presentation ceremony. There were so many boys that achieved so much in the side that Peter found it difficult to choose a player of the year and for their performances during the year Jack Turner and Sam Rounce were presented with awards personally made by Peter.

Peter's contribution to the Colt's section this year cannot be understated. As well as managing the Under 15s to success in league and cup, he was also the driving force behind the Club successfully applying to join the Jack Petchey Foundation Scheme. The Colts evening was an ideal opportunity for the Club to make its first award under the scheme, and so this was carried as part of the evening's agenda.

Chris Stockwell was nominated and deemed a very worthy winner of the award for his dedication, sportsmanship and fine performances on the field. The award was presented by Clive Allen former Spurs and England footballer who is a keen supporter of the club (see our Jack Petchey Foundation dedicated web-site page).

The colts section has yet to find its own sponsor for the next 12 months but it is grateful for the continuing support that local solicitors Wortley Byers give to The Brentwood Cricket, Hockey and Tennis Clubs much of which finds its way down to youth development.
