Brentwood Colts U13s Report and Statistics 2006

CEDCB League Played 7 Lost 4 Won 3
Peter Coe Cup Played 6 Lost 2 Won 3 No Result 1

The U13's season started out with slightly bleak prospects; our first match was a preliminary round of the the cup. We had to rely upon the services of three U11 players. We went down by 30 runs despite some good efforts from our younger players. It looked as if we would have to survive with a very small squad, but managed to pick up a few valuable assets at the start of the season, greatly increasing our strength in depth.

The squad has had the benefit of top coaching provided by Terry Charington and Phil Ayres throughout the season. Early lapses in concentration and application were soon remedied and before long the boys really started to benefit from the coaching.

With a lack of cricketing experience amongst the 13 year olds, James Welham was appointed Captain. He has proved to have been an excellent choice. We had several good games over the season but our Peter Coe Cup efforts against Old Parks and Benfleet were my personal highlights. In both games batting second and with U11's filling in for absent 13 year olds we chased down 176 and 223 respectively, the Benfleet game being won on the last ball.

The team has steadily improved winning 50% of our games; with victories in 4 of our last 5 games.

Performances of the season:

Jack Greenwood with the bat, especially the first half of the season, never looked like getting out. Matt Thorpe-Apps against Old Parkonians steered us to victory with a faultless 68 and Jamie Dawes who took on the giants of Benfleet scoring a courageous 62 to help win the game of the season.

On the bowling front, James Welham was consistently our most successful bowler with 4 overs 4 wickets for 3 the best figures of the year. Jack Hoy, Carl Dutton and Matt Thorpe-Apps also turned in good bowling performances over the year. Fielder of the year was Tom Harrington with other good performances from Jack Hoy and Jack Coombes with Jack Farge also showing his bravery with bat and in the field on numerous occasions. Several causes for optimism apart from those already mentioned notably Tim Hemsbrough's ability to turn the ball extravagantly, Tom Harries focus and determination with the bat and the all round capabilities of Joe McGovern.

Thanks to all the boys and parents with special thanks to Sam Dawes, Prem Pithia and Edward Hornby, the U11's who did more than just make up the numbers.
