Chelmsford Under 15's Indoor Cricket

In the final league stages of the tournament Brentwood U15's came third and only just missed out on going through to the quarterfinals. As a consolation we were the only team in our league to beat Chelmsford whom went on to be beaten by Wanstead in the quarterfinals. As you can see from the table below Upminster (runners up in our league), Hornchurch, Wanstead and Ilford will all compete in the semi-finals later this month for a place in the final.

Brentwood Colts U15's vs. Chelmsford: Six-A-Side

Venue: Essex Cricket Ground

Date: 5th March 2006

Team: Ed Allen
James Boon
Harri Jones
Matt Lowman (Capt.)
Chris Stockwell
Sam Rounce
This was our last match in the league stages and one we had to win to even have a slim chance of progressing to the knock out stages. So far Chelmsford were unbeaten and we were all expecting a difficult game. Our captain won the toss and decided to have a bowl and chase down any total that the opposition scored.

James Boon and Harri Jones opened the bowling for us and in the second over Matt Lowman ran out the opening batsman off the bowling of Harri Jones, Chelmsford were 15 for 1. We continued to bowl accurately and the opposition were finding it difficult to get runs. In the seventh over we claimed our second wicket when Sam Rounce managed to run out another of the Chelmsford batsman off the bowling of Matt Lowman, the opposition were now 44 for 2. In the next over Sam Rounce took our third wicket, with Matt Lowman taking a catch, the score was now 51 for 3 off eight overs. Our fourth wicket came in the tenth and final over when Harri Jones ran out another of the Chelmsford batsman off his own bowling. This gave Chelmsford a final total of 91 for 4 off 10 overs.

All of the Brentwood team worked very hard in the field to contain the Chelmsford batsman at a rate of below 10 an over. However it is worth highlighting three particular individual performances, Chris Stockwell who kept wicket and gave nothing away, James Boon who bowled 2 overs for 7 runs, and Sam Rounce likewise bowled 2 overs getting 1 wicket for 13 runs.

Brentwood then had the task of running down the oppositions total. Ed Allen and James Boon opened the batting but unfortunately James was run out in the second over with only 15 runs on the board. Harri Jones then came to the wicket determined to better his score from his last game. Both Jones and Allen pushed the score along nicely until Ed Allen had to retire on 30 after hitting two huge sixes.

Next to join Harri Jones at the crease was Matt Lowman, both players continued to score runs steadily until we reached 78 when Lowman was run out for 19. Chris Stockwell was next in and moved the score on to 87 before he edged a catch to the Chelmsford wicket keeper. Brentwood were now 87 for 3 from eight overs and within reach of victory. With only 5 runs needed Sam Rounce joined Harri Jones at the crease and between them they scored the remaining runs required to claim the win. Final score Brentwood 92 for 3 off 8 overs.

The batting highlights of the Brentwood innings were a glorious 30 runs (not out) from Ed Allen, who hit two big sixes and two fours, Harri Jones hitting some great textbook shots for his 26 runs (not out), and finally Matt Lowman scoring 19 runs whilst supporting Harri Jones in a middle order partnership that kept us on track for the eventual win.

Brentwood's final figures for the competition were played 5 games, won 3, lost 2. We collected 45 points from our wins, 5 bonus batting points and 4 bowling, giving us an overall total of 54 points.

If Chelmsford and Upminster were able to win their final games they would finish above us with Brentwood possibly in third place. Unfortunately we may have left ourselves too much to do in our final two games to secure a place in the knock out stages but the lads that took part in this competition all played very well and can be proud of their individual performances.

Well done to all the team members.

Brentwood Colts U15's vs. Havering & Redbridge: Six-A-Side

Venue: Essex Cricket Ground

Date: 12th February 2006

Team: Ed Allen (Wicket Keeper)
Harri Jones
Matt Lowman (Capt)
Sam Rounce
Gautham Datta
James Welham
This was a match we had to win to have any chance of remaining in this competition. We won the toss and decided to have a bowl and chase down any total that the opposition scored.

Matt Lowman and Harri Jones bowled the first four overs and we didn't have long to wait before our first wicket. In the second over Ed Allen reacted quickly and stumped the opening batsman off the bowling of Harri Jones (9 for 1). We then took two further wickets by run outs in the fourth over (28 for 2) and sixth over (44 for 3). The bowlers were Harri Jones and Sam Rounce who bowled two overs in the game.

James Welham who plays for the under 11's team bowled the 5th and 7th overs whilst Gautam Datta bowled the 9th.

With the opposition having pushed the score up to 75 the skipper decided to let young James Welham bowl the final over. On his first ball we had a run out (75 for 4), he then bowled two dot balls, followed by another run out on his fourth ball (75 for 5). The fifth was a dot ball, preceded by three runs off the last ball of the innings to give the opposition a total score of 78 for 5 off 10 overs.

Ed Allen and Harri Jones opened the batting for Brentwood but unfortunately Harri was unluckily caught off the wall after only facing two balls and we were 4 for 1 in the first over with Jones out for 0.

Matt Lowman joined Ed Allen at the crease and after a slightly nervous start began the task of building a partnership. Both batsmen started to strike the ball well and they pushed the score along to 47 for 1 before Lowman was caught brilliantly one handed by a Havering fielder. Lowman made 21 and Brentwood were 47 for 2. This partnership had added some 43 runs to the score line.

Shortly after Sam Rounce came to the crease Ed Allen retired on 25, this meant that Gautham Datta replaced him. The score had moved on to 63 before we lost our third wicket when Rounce was run out He was then replaced by James Welham but unfortunately was bowled for 1 shortly after. Brentwood was now 64 for 4 off seven overs.

The match was on a knife-edge with Ed Allen coming back to the crease to join Gautham Datta. On 71 for 4 Allen was run out making the score 71 for 5. Gautham needed to score 8 runs to win the game with plenty of balls remaining. He then managed to get four leg byes plus a run leaving 3 to win. With a nudged single and two further extras Brentwood claimed the victory and closed their innings with 80 runs on the board with five wickets down in the eighth over.

This victory has moved Brentwood Colts to second place in the league with 39 points. Chelmsford has 45 points but have played one game less. If we can win our final game in March the lads may yet to go on to the knock out stages.

Well done to all the team members.
