Team: Ed Allen (Captain); Tim Barbone (Vice Captain); James Boon; Josh Brown; Harri Jones; Matthew Lowman; Ed Nation; Sam Rounce; Chris Stockwell; Jack Turner; Aaron West; 12th man Jack Denman

This was both teams first under 16's match play game of the season. Unfortunately due to heavy rain the night before the game was delayed by around one hour and the umpires decided to reduce the overs in the match from 40 to 35.

Horndons captain Danny Joyce won the toss and decided to put Brentwood into bat. Aaron West made his debut for Brentwood and opened the batting with Tim Barbone. The pair made an excellent start putting on a 58 run partnership before West was caught for 33 off the bowling of Ian Clarke.

James Boon was next in and the score moved on to 71 before Barbone was caught for 23 off the bowling of Jamie Dennis. The Captain Ed Allen joined Boon at the crease and the score moved on to 103 for 2 before he was caught for 19 off Max Osborn.

Ed Nation was the next batsman in and like West was making his debut for Brentwood. Unfortunately the score had only moved on to 117 for 3 when Daniel Hooper bowled Nation for 2. There were very few overs left when Chris Stockwell joined Boon and on 130 for 4 Stockwell was run out for 6.

Matt Lowman came in to face the last few balls and the innings closed at 135 for 5 off 35 overs with Boon on an unbeaten 25 and Lowman 2 not out. There were 25 extras.

Horndon's openers Max Osborn and Sam Reed put on a partnership of 52 before Allen caught Reed off the bowling of Lowman for 24. Daniel Hooper scored 7 before he was trapped LBW to Barbone. In the very next over Turner caught Osborn off the bowling of Lowman for 23 and Horndon were 63 for 3.

Matt Hooper joined the Captain Danny Joyce at the crease but some 17 runs later Rounce caught him off the bowling of Jones for 7. The away team were now 80 for 4. Joe Joyce joined his brother at the crease and put on a partnership of some 51 runs before Allen caught him bowled by Turner for 20.

Horndon were now in sight of victory and with just one over left the captain and Jamie Dennis added the remaining 5 runs needed for victory and won by 5 wickets with Danny Joyce on an unbeaten 39 and Jamie Dennis 2 not out. There were 14 extras.

This was always going to be a difficult game for Brentwood as they had eight of their regular players unavailable for selection.

Colchester won the toss and elected to bowl. Aaron West and Ed Allen opened the batting for Brentwood and after a cautious start had put on 12 before Michael Coomber bowled Allen for 5. Jack Denman was next out bowled by Groves for 0 followed by Michael Kearns who was bowled first ball by Groves for 0.

Match abandoned due to rain

Team: James Boon (Captain); Aaron West (Vice Captain); Ross Phillips; Ed Nation; Matthew Lowman; Jack Turner; Time Barbone; Sam Rounce; Josh Brown; Joe Early; Michael Kearns

This game was plagued by bad weather. The match was due to start at 1.00pm but the umpires deemed the pitch to be unfit due to surface water.

Finally at 4.00pm the umpires allowed proceedings to start after deciding to reduce the game to 25 overs. Brentwood won the toss and decided to bat.

Due to the reduced overs Brentwood switched their batting order and opened with Aaron West and Ross Phillips. The score had only moved on to 8 when Phillips was run out for 4. Before adding any further runs to the score West was then caught by Naqvi off the bowling of Scammell for 2. Brentwood was now 8 for 2.

Ed Nation and Matt Lowman were now at the crease and moved the score onto 25 before Lowman was caught by Scammell bowled Naqvi for 1. Jack Turner joined Nation and between them put on a partnership of 50 runs before Dom Hurst bowled Turner for 17. Brentwood was now 75 for 4.

James Boon was the next batsman in but some 6 runs later Nobes bowled Nation for a gallant 41 runs. Tim Barbone joined Boon but some 14 runs later Barbone was bowled by Hurst for 11. Sam Rounce and James Boon continued the Brentwood innings until heavy rain fell and brought the days play to a close with Boon and Rounce not out 7 and 0 respectively. Brentwood was 102 for 6 off 24 overs (including 19 extras). The match was concluded and both teams shared the points.

Unfortunately this match like many this season had fallen foul of the weather.

Other memorable bowling figures were from three of the Brentwood lads Matthew Lowman 7 overs 1 maiden 24 runs 3 wickets. Sam Rounce 7 overs 1 maiden 31 runs 3 wickets and finally Tim Barbone with a brilliant 8 overs 5 maidens 6 runs 1 wicket.

In terms of batting Danny Ware (Benfleet) made a creditable 39 but as mentioned in the first paragraph this appeared to be a bowlers wicket with runs difficult to come by.

Both teams were missing many of their regular players for this last match of the U16's group stages. The away side won the toss and decided to bat.

Brentwood openers James Boon and Chris Stockwell started the innings cautiously and the score had only moved on to six when Chelmsford wicket keeper caught Stockwell bowled Jack Moss for 3. Matt Lowman was next in but after a short period of resistance was caught by Steve Drain bowled Aktar for 7 and Brentwood were now 20 for 2.

Boon carefully moved the score along with new batsman Tom Patient playing a supporting role. Unfortunately Patient tried to hit a ball over the bowlers head and was caught & bowled Pandya for 0. William Ashby joined Boon and between them pushed the score to 77 before Boon was bowled by Aktar for 22. Brentwood were now 77for 4.

With only one further run added Ashby was then caught by Aktar bowled Drain for 29. Brentwood Colts U16's Match play 2006 Season Report

We were due to play nine games in our group stage; however, we only managed to complete seven. We won one game, lost five, two matches were abandoned because of rain and another was cancelled due to England's participation in the World Cup and we were unable to field a team for that day so the tournament organisers awarded the game to our opponents. All of our squad players with the exception of Barbone, Kearns, Gulrajani and Woodward were U15's or younger and the latter of those two were unable to play early in the season. This was a big disadvantage to us as most of the teams we played did field a higher percentage of U16's players with county or district experience.

Other factors we faced on Sundays was the regular loss of three of our best players due their selection for Essex U15's matches, Colts players being selected for the men's matches on Saturdays whilst already having played for school and club mid-week. Understandably some of these players felt they were unable to play 'back to back matches' over the week-end after such a gruelling week. Inevitably we were never able to select our best team and being drawn in such a strong group meant it was always going to be difficult for us to qualify for the latter stages of the competition.

However on a more positive note this did allow more of our Colts players the opportunity to take part in this competition and hopefully gain some invaluable experience for future seasons.

In terms of individual performances I think it is fair to say that this season we did under achieve with the bat and too many of our players were out cheaply. James Boon, Aaron (Skiddaz) West and Ed (Pea) Nation were probably our best and most consistent batsmen over the games they played. Unfortunately for many players like Harri Jones, Jack (Tino) Turner and William Ashby their batting statistics are purely based on the one or two games that they played.

Overall I think James Boon deserves a mention for his truly gutsy batting performances and reluctance to capitulate in a number of the games with his highest score of 41 being recorded at Upminster.

Aaron (Skiddaz) West and Ed (Pea) Nation (who only joined Brentwood Cricket Club this season) have been excellent acquisitions for us and both showed their technically correct batting qualities on more than one occasion with Aaron scoring a 54 against Ardleigh Green and Ed's 41 against Hainault. Also Harri Jones hit a very good 42 against Upminster.

Other players worth a mention who produced enjoyable and fun to watch cameo innings were Jack Denman's 26 in our last match against Chelmsford and our very own Sam (Abdul) Rounce's 16 not out against Benfleet.

On the bowling front fast bowler Matt (Matty)Lowman took most wickets for us in the group stage ending up with six and a very respectable average and economy rate. His technique of swinging the ball around gave many opposition batsmen a few headaches.

Tim (Rocky) Barbone was by far our best spin bowler. His overall technique continually worried batsman and they found it difficult to score runs hence his unbelievable economy rate. Unfortunately for me Tim was unable to play in a number of our games.

Other players who performed well with the ball were James Boon, Jack (Tino) Turner, Harri Jones and Sam (Abdul) Rounce.

Finally on the field of play our skipper Eddie (Teddy) Allen always kept the team motivated throughout our games, assisted by Josh (Bundini) Brown whose continued vocal support for his team mates and heckles for the opponents kept us all amused. Also Eddie took the most catches for us.

Overall it has been a pleasure to be the Brentwood Colts U16's Team Manager this season and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve West and Dave Stockwell for coaching the lads, Jan West for organising and scoring most of the matches, Pat Blye for supplying the teas for home games, Cyril Marshall our resident U16's umpire and finally a big thank you to the legendary Dave Barbone Chairman of the Colts Committee and demon bowler who recently playing for 'The Gentlemen of Essex Team' against The Brentwood School 1st XI dismissed Essex protégés West and Prowting in a five wicket haul and is now awaiting a call up for the Essex over fifties.
